The Robyn MacPhee and Eddie MacKenzie teams from the Charlottetown Curling Complex have earned berths in their respective championship rounds at the PEI Tankard provincial men’s and in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s championships at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside, following the “A” section finals in the modified triple knockout draws this afternoon. The Scotties and the Tankard are taking place at the same time and venue this year as a pilot project to help increase interest in the Olympic sport of curling.

The MacPhee rink from Charlottetown doubled their clubmates the Lisa Jackson team 8-4 to take the Scotties (women’s) “A” section, while the Eddie MacKenzie team, also from Charlottetown, beat the host club’s Blair Jay squad, also by an 8-4 score, to take the Tankard (men’s) “A” event.

The two teams now drop down to compete in the B section, where MacPhee goes straight to the 6 pm Friday final, playing the winner of a 1 pm contest between Jackson, and Veronica Smith, also from Charlottetown. MacKenzie plays clubmate Phil Gorveatt, while Blair Jay takes on Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson in the Tankard “B” semis at 1, with the winners advancing to the 6 pm men’s B final.
If MacPhee and/or MacKenzie also win the B finals, they will have spots in both of the two championship games on Sunday, and win their respective title if they win either game, while their opponent, the C finalist, would have to win both. Should MacPhee or MacKenzie also win the “C” final, they would immediately be declared the champion for their event, and their championship round would not be needed.
Four teams – the Tammy Dewar-skipped foursome from the Montague Curling Rink, plus three Charlottetown Curling Complex teams, captained by Lisa Jackson, Robyn MacPhee, and Veronica Smith, are entered in the Scotties, with the winning rink advancing to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, February 18-26 at Meridian Centre, St. Catherines, Ont.
Eight teams – four from the Charlottetown Curling Complex (skips Phil Gorveatt, Eddie MacKenzie, Jamie Newson, and Dennis Watts), two from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex (skipped by Blair Jay and Calvin Smith), a combined Charlottetown/Silver Fox rink skipped by Robert Campbell, and a Tyler Harris-skipped combined rink from Charlottetown and the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, are competing in the PEI Tankard, with the winning team advancing to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 4-12, 2017 at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, NL.
