SUMMERSIDE – The Veronica Smith rink stayed alive at the Scotties provincial women’s curling championship on Saturday evening.

The Smith rink, which also includes third stone Jane DiCarlo, defeated Robyn MacPhee 8-4 in the C section final of the Scotties provincial women’s curling championship at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside on Saturday night. The two Charlottetown Curling Complex rinks will meet in Sunday’s championship round.

Smith and her Charlottetown Curling Complex (CCC) rink handed clubmate Robyn MacPhee her first loss in four games to win the C section final 8-4 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex.
If MacPhee had defeated Smith her rink of third stone Sarah Fullerton, second stone Meaghan Hughes and lead Michelle McQuaid would have been declared provincial champions because they would have swept the A, B and C sections in the modified triple-knockout format.
Smith’s win forces a championship round on Sunday. Smith, third stone Jane DiCarlo, second stone Whitney Young and lead Aleya Quilty must now defeat MacPhee twice on Sunday. MacPhee only needs one win.
