Special victory for member of MacKenzie rink — Nabuurs headed to first Brier (Journal)

SUMMERSIDE – It was a special day for Matt Nabuurs.

The 25-year-old won his first Tankard provincial men’s curling championship on Sunday afternoon. Nabuurs will now compete in his first Tim Hortons Brier Canadian championship in St. John’s, N.L., from March 4 to 12.

The MacKenzie rink defeated Phil Gorveatt’s rink twice on Sunday to earn P.E.I.’s berth at the Tim Hortons Brier in St. John’s, N.L., in March.

“It’s exciting,” said Nabuurs, who is originally from Montague but now lives in Cornwall. “I’ve always watched the Brier on TV and always wanted to be there.”
Nabuurs’s teammates were thrilled to share in the accomplishment.
“It’s his first Purple Heart, and it’s really special to be a part of that,” said lead Robbie Doherty.
