UPEI Women (Smith, 2-2) split Friday games, Men (Gallant,1-2) have 2 losses on AUS Ch’ships Day Two

Day two is over at the  Subway Atlantic University Sports Curling Championships at the Truro Curling Club, with the UPEI Women splitting their games to go to an even 2-2 win-loss record, and the Men, skipped by Chris Gallant, losing theirs to fall to 1-2.

Team UPEI Women (Veronica Smith) lost 8-4 to Dalhousie, and handed St. FX their first loss in the evening draw. 7-6 in an extra end. Three teams – St. FX, DAL, and SMU, have 1 loss, while UPEI, Mt. A, and UNB have 2. MUN are out of playoff contention at 0-4.

UPEI Women’s last Round Robin games on Saturday are against Mt. A at 9. and Memorial at 4.

In men’s play, the Panthers fell 5-3 to MUN and 7-5 to the undefeated (3-0) Dal Tigers. UPEI plays Acadia at 9 am Saturday, UNB at 12:30, and SMU at 7:30. DAL and MUN are both undefeated in the Men’s section, UNB has 1 loss, UPEI has two, while St. FX and SMU have three, and Acadia is 0-4.

The championships, featuring the top 4 men’s and women’s rinks, wrap up on Sunday with semi-finals at 9 and Gold and Bronze medal games at 1.

Team UPEI Men is skipped by Christopher Gallant, and includes Kyle Holland, Alex MacFadyen, and Brooks Roche with coach Peter Gallant, while Team UPEI Women, skipped by Sabrina Smith, includes Meghan Ching, Breanne Burgoyne, and Annika Kelly, and is coached by Paul Smith. Islander Alex Sutherland is playing on Team UNB Men, with PEI’s Lauren MacFadyen playing for the StFX women’s rink.

 This year the top 3 teams for each gender (it’s normally two) will represent the AUS at the U Sports / Curling Canada University Championships, hosted by the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, March 18-22 at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay Ont.
