UPEI Men come from behind to tie, then steal extra end to advance to USports Cdn. Univ. Ch’ships

The UPEI Panthers men’s team, skipped by Chris Gallant, stole a deuce in an extra end to beat the UNB Varsity Reds team by an 8-6 score in the Subway AUS Championships Bronze medal game this afternoon in Truro, to win the third and final Atlantic Canada men’s berth at the U Sports / Curling Canada University Championships, hosted by the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, March 18-22 at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay Ont. The UNB squad, which includes PEI native Alex Sutherland, had a 6-3 lead going into the 10th end, but Gallant and his team of Kyle Holland, Alex MacFadyen, and Brooks Roche with coach Peter Gallant, tied the game with a 10th end triple and then stole the extra end deuce for the come-from-behind win.

Both the UPEI Men and UPEI Women, skipped by Sabrina Smith, had 3-3 round robin records, but only the men advanced to the playoff round, where they lost 8-5 to 1st place Memorial in the semi-finals, but managed to grab the third and final AUS men’s spot in the nationals by winning the Bronze Medal game. Memorial went on to double Dalhousie 10-5 in eight ends to win the Gold Medal game.

The St. FX women’s rink, which includes PEI native Lauren MacFadyen, downed St. FX 9-3 to capture the women’s Gold medal, while UNB beat Mt. A 8-3 to win the Bronze medal match and the third  AUS women’s playoff berth at the nationals.
