PEI scores seven point end in seeding pool win at the Canadian Mixed (Curling Canada)

QUEBEC, ONTARIO AND NEW BRUNSWICK ON TOP AT MIXED CHAMPIONSHIP

The Championship pool went into action on Thursday, battling for playoff spots at the 2018 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Swan River, Man. While Quebec maintains its seven-game winning streak at the top of the standings, Ontario and New Brunswick are right behind, both with 6-1 records.

Draw 10

Undefeated Quebec kept Northern Ontario (3-3) on their heels in typical big-weight fashion. Northern Ontario’s Charlie Robert could only manage singles in ends three and seven, as Robert Desjardins ran Robert out of rocks. Final: 4-2.

Newfoundland and Labrador (4-2) stole two ends as they controlled play with the hitting ability of second Zach Young and vice Brooke Godsland. A Nova Scotia double takeout and a missed NL last rock took the game to an extra end. NL prevailed in the extra, 7-5.

Jamie Koe’s Northwest Territories squad started strong, but New Brunswick’s Charlie Sullivan kept the pressure on, going up 5-4 heading to the eighth end. Koe’s last rock needed the button but the final result was a New Brunswick 6-4 win.

Ontario versus Alberta was a contest of draw weight. The ice had slowed since the early games. The game was controlled by Ontario (5-1) with two consecutive steals of one, but the game came down to Ontario skip Mike Anderson’s draw to the button for a dramatic 7-5 win.

A Seeding Pool game between host Manitoba (1-5) and Yukon (1-5) went to an extra with a clutch draw in the eighth by Yukon skip Robert Smallwood. In the extra, Dunstone finished with a takeout for the 7-5 win.

Draw 12

In the fourth end of a close game, and faced with three opposition rocks, Ontario ‘s Anderson made a double takeout to salvage one point. A blast into a mass of granite left Northwest Territories’ Koe with a score of two in the fifth end. But in the eighth, leading 5-3, a missed takeout by the Northwest Territories skip gave Ontario a chance for three and the 6-5 win.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chris Ford commandeered a 3-0 lead in end two before Northern Ontario managed a single in three. Ford cruised to a 5-2 win by running them out of rocks.

PEI pummelled Nunavut in a game that featured a seven-point end, quickly finishing 13-5 in six ends.

New Brunswick’s Sullivan stole two in the fifth end to go up 5-2 over Alberta. In the seventh, Sullivan made a double for three on the way to a resounding 8-4 win.

In their usual fashion, Quebec played peels and takeouts with aplomb, keeping it close with Nova Scotia (4-3). Tied 2-2 after seven ends, Quebec skip Desjardins made the draw to the eight-foot for the 3-2 win, keeping Quebec’s undefeated record intact.

Seeding Pool

The teams not competing in the Championship Pool are playing for seeding in next year’s championship. Saskatchewan’s Bruce Korte finished the day at the top of the standings, followed by British Columbia and Manitoba. Yukon, Prince Edward Island and Nunavut round out the field.
