Round robin play wrapped up Saturday night at the 11th annual Fall Fling junior cashspiel at the Silver Fox in Summerside, with the semi-finals going at 9 this morning, and the junior men’s and junior women’s finals following at 1 pm. 12 junior men’s and an equal number of junior women’s teams took part, with representatives from all four Atlantic provinces. Sunday games are 10 ends in this event (Friday and Saturday games were eight).
Two junior men’s teams – the Michael Donovan foursome from Curl Moncton, which is coached by Summerside native Daryell Nowlan, and includes his son Josh at third, along with the Ryan Abraham squad from the Halifax Mayflower Curling Club, which includes third stone Brooks Roche from Montague, finished round robin play with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record in their respective pools, and earned two of the four semi-final spots. The other two teams in the semis had 4-1 records, with Abraham taking on Liam Marin of Saint John’s Thistle-St. Andrews club, whose rink includes Crapaud’s Tyler Smith, while Donovan faces the Alex MacFadyen rink from the host Silver Fox club.
There was only one undefeated team after round robin play on the junior women’s side – the Kaylee Nodding team from Bridgewater NS. They’ll be taking on Charlottetown’s Alexis Burris rink, who finished the round robin with a 3-2 record, in the 9 am semi-final round. Team Brianne Batherson from the Lakeshore Curling Club in Lower Sackville NS had only one loss in the round robin, and will face the Annika Kelly rink from Charlottetown, who had 3 wins and 2 losses in the round robin. Teams MacLean from Cornwall and Reeves from Berwick NS also had 3-2 records in the A pool, but Team Kelly got the spot in the money round after tiebreaking rules were used.
