Peter Gallant among finalists for PEI Mutual Coach of the Year award (Guardian)

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Three names synonymous with their sports are being recognized next week by Sport P.E.I.

Peter Gallant (curling), Eddie MacDonald (rugby) and Joe Ryan (volleyball) are this year’s finalists for the P.E.I. Mutual Insurance Coach of the Year Award. The winner will be announced Feb. 7 during the annual awards ceremony at Holland College.

Peter Gallant

Peter Gallant and his family have become a staple in Island curling, yet none have stepped onto the Olympic stage.

That is all about to change.
Gallant took on the position of head coach for a women’s South Korean curling team in 2016 with the task of qualifying for the Olympics. A year later, Gallant and his team achieved the goal and will be representing the Asian nation at PyeongChang.

It will be an Olympic icebreaker for the Gallants, as Peter will hope to achieve nothing short of a podium finish later in February, but chances are we will see more Olympic action from the family in years to come.

Quebec teenage team cause chaos in Scotties pool, PEI loses to Quebec, Team Canada to drop to 1-5 (Curling Canada)

PENTICTON, B.C. – Two teams took a big step up as a team of teenagers created chaos in Pool B action on Tuesday.

Quebec’s teenage team from Alma skipped by Émilia Gagné improved to 3-3 Tuesday afternoon by scoring two in the 10th end for an 8-6 victory over Prince Edward Island (now 1-5) skipped by Robyn MacPhee of Charlottetown.

Team Canada and Alberta registered victories Tuesday evening to secure spots in the Championship Pool of the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts at the South Okanagan Events Centre. They both have 5-1 records in Pool B heading into the final preliminary round-robin draw Wednesday. Newfoundland/Labrador, however, was denied its berth in the Championship Pool when it was upset by Quebec 9-7. The team from St. John’s skipped by Stacie Curtis sits third in Pool B at 4-2 while 18-year-old Gagné is in a three-way tie for the fourth spot with Ontario and British Columbia at 3-3.

Gagné admitted she was a bit lucky in the eighth end when she didn’t make the double takeout she attempted, but the bounces actually led to her team stealing two to take a 7-5 lead.

“That’s what made the difference, but in the end it was mostly about who had the hammer in the 10th end,” said Gagné.

After an opening-draw win, Quebec dropped three in a row before winning two games on Tuesday.

“After three losses we were saying we have nothing to lose now. We’re just enjoying having fun. Before the game we were dancing and enjoying,” said Gagné.

That leaves the teenage team of third Mélina Perron, 17, second Marie-Pier Harvey, 17, lead Chloé Arnaud, 19, alternate Isabelle Thiboutot and coach Joel Gagné, Émila’s father, in the hunt for a Championship Pool berth. There’s one big road block, however: Alberta.

“It’s a big game (Wednesday),” said Gagné. “We’re here to get experience and no matter what happens we’re proud of what we’ve done so far. I think it’s even higher than our expectations that we had here entering this week.”

Alberta skip Casey Scheidegger, third Cary-Ann Taggart, second Jessie Scheidegger, lead Kristie Moore, alternate Susan O’Connor and coach Carolyn McRorie scored early and often in an 11-1 rout of B.C.’s Kesa Van Osch (Nanaimo). Alberta scored two in the second end and stole three in the third for an early 5-0 lead. A steal of three in the sixth, making it 9-1, proved to be too big a deficit.

It was a bounce-back day for Alberta. After falling to Newfoundland/Labrador Monday afternoon, and falling from the ranks of the undefeated in the process, the Lethbridge/Grande Prairie team responded Tuesday with an 11-4 win over Nunavut in the morning before routing B.C. in the evening.

“That’s good news,” said Scheidegger when informed Alberta had reached the Championship Pool. “We just want to stay tough and keep playing well heading into that championship round.

“I feel like we’re not quite firing on all cylinders yet. I think we can still improve. We have a knack for getting better as the games go on. So I’m feeling really positive, and hoping we can continue to build on everything we’ve done so far.”

A victory over Quebec in the final game will help heading into the Championship Pool since their records in opening pool play will be carried over.

“Going into that championship round with only one loss would be huge. We definitely want to keep that record,” said Scheidegger. “Everybody in that pool’s going to be tough to beat, so we want to go in with a good win-loss record so that we can maybe can afford one or two losses in there. But we have to play well, and we know that going in there.”

Skip Michelle Englot and her Winnipeg-based Team Canada squad got its Championship Pool spot by defeating Prince Edward Island’s Robyn MacPhee of Charlottetown (1-5) 7-5.

“It was a really solid game,” said Englot. “It was probably our best effort as a team. Our goal is to continue building momentum for this first round and then take that into the championship round.”

They’ll be facing a hungry Ontario team skipped by Hollie Duncan (Toronto) who cruised to a 12-2 triumph over Nunavut (Iqaluit) skipped by Amie Shackleton. Nunavut is 0-6.

Quebec will not only be battling Alberta on Wednesday, but B.C. and Ontario as well for the fourth and final Pool B berth. B.C.’s final preliminary round-robin game will be Wednesday afternoon against Newfoundland/Labrador while Ontario takes on Team Canada. If tiebreakers are necessary they will be played Thursday morning.

The 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts continues with draws Wednesday at 9 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m. (all times PST). PEI finishes up round-robin play against Nunavut at 2 p.m. (6 p.m. Atlantic).

Team MacPhee (Facebook)

The PEI Masters (age 60+) curling championships wrapped up today in Charlottetown, with Cornwall’s Sandy Hope rink winning the Women’s event during the 10 am draw, and Ted MacFadyen and his team from the Silver Fox winning the  Men’s in the afternoon. Ted MacFadyen rink repeats as PEI Masters Men’s Champs

The Ted MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside are the repeat PEI Masters Men’s Champions, winning two games today over Cornwall’s Bill Hope rink by scores of 8-3 and 8-0. Hope had won two Modified Triple Knockout sections to MacFadyen’s one, meaning that a win in either game today would have  given him the title, but he gave up a triple in the fourth end of the first game to trail 5-1 going into the second half, and couldn’t get on the scoreboard at all in game two, calling it quits after just five ends, following a MacFadyen triple, single steal, and stolen triple in ends three through five.

The winning MacFadyen rink includes  Lou Nowlan, who already has his name on the trophy a record 12 times, throwing fourth stones, with MacFadyen throwing third and calling the game, along with second Earle Proude and lead Alan Montgomery.  Rounding out the Hope foursome were third Craig Mackie, second stone David Murphy, and lead Peter Murdoch.

Both teams have earned the right to advance to the Maritime Masters Curling Championships, at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow Nova Scotia, March 16-18 2018.  The winning  MacFadyen team, or the Hope rink should they choose not to attend, also earn the right to compete in the 2018 Canadian Masters Curling Championships in BC, April 1-8 at Surrey’s Cloverdale Curling Club and White Rock’s Peace Arch Curling Club.

The two-team women’s Masters Championship was decided earlier on Monday with the Sandy Hope rink repeating as champions, taking the Best of Five competition three games to one over their Cornwall clubmates the Shirley Berry team. (Click for story)

Sandy Hope team wins PEI Masters women’s title, Ted MacFadyen rink forces sudden-death men’s final

The Sandy Hope team from the Cornwall Curling Club beat their clubmates, the Shirley Berry rink, by a 7-4 score this morning to win the best of five PEI Master’s women’s championship at the Charlottetown Curling Club. It’s Hope’s third consecutive PEI Masters title. Hope won the first two and the fourth game in the series, so game five was unnecessary. In today’s match, Hope scored three in the fourth end to lead 4-2 and scored a deuce in the sixth, while keeping Berry to singles in ends five and seven. Hope had a guard behind cover in the final end, and Berry couldn’t get to it. In the closing ceremonies, Hope announced that they will be attending both the Maritime Masters at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow Nova Scotia, March 16-18 2018, as well as the 2018 Canadian Masters Curling Championships in BC, April 1-8 at Surrey’s Cloverdale Curling Club and White Rock’s Peace Arch Curling Club. The Berry foursome also earned a spot in the Maritime Championships. Other members of the Hope squad are third Shelley Ebbett, second stone Debbie Rhodenhizer, and lead Arleen Harris, with coach Bill Hope, while Linda Fairhurst, Marlene Proude, and Marjorie Matthews round out the Berry team.

On the men’s side, there will be a sudden-death final at 2 pm between the Bill Hope rink from Cornwall and the Ted MacFadyen foursome from the Silver Fox in Summerside. Hope had won two of the three Modified Triple Knockout sections, while MacFadyen took one, so Hope would have  taken the title with a win this morning, but MacFadyen, up 7-1 after five ends, forced the extra game with an 8-3 win in seven ends.

Master’s curlers are age 60 and over.

PEI beats BC to go to 1-2, Alberta takes down Team Canada to remain undefeated at Scotties (Curling Canada)

PENTICTON, B.C. – Casey Scheidegger may be a Scotties rookie but her Alberta team’s performance at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts is that of seasoned vets in the granite game.

The Lethbridge/Grande Prairie squad of Scheidegger, third Cary-Anne McTaggart, second Jessie Scheidegger, lead Kristie Moore, alternate Susan O’Connor and coach Carolyn McRorie lived up to its top seed in Pool B in the expanded 16-team format by rolling to a 10-6 victory over Team Canada skipped by Michelle Englot (Winnipeg) Sunday evening. Alberta joins Newfoundland/Labrador at 3-0. They meet Monday afternoon (2 p.m., all times Pacific).

“It’s a good feeling, but we don’t want to get too big of heads. We still have a lot of games left. We’re just trying to keep rolling and stay confident,” said Scheidegger, 31. “We just have a really good handle on the ice, we’re communicating really well about the paths and knowing when the ice is changing. It held up great tonight to help us catch on and throw with confidence.”

The big shot of the game appeared to be a long angle-raise takeout by Scheidegger to score three in the sixth end for a 7-3 lead. But she gave a trey right back the next end when Scheidegger doubled out her own two shot rocks instead of a Canada stone, allowing Englot to score three. In the eighth, she had to make a delicate draw just to score one to remain ahead 8-6. The deal was sealed, however, in the ninth when Englot sailed through the house on her last shot, allowing Alberta to steal two.

“We had a lead and they came back on us, so that’s one we’re going back to the books as well and talk about tonight, but we still feel good,” said Scheidegger, a teacher in Lethbridge.

Although this is its first trip to the Scotties, Scheidegger’s team got some intense competitive experience at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in Ottawa, where they went 3-4, but were in the running for a playoff spot until the end.

“That trials experience was big for us in giving us some confidence playing here,” said Scheidegger.

The Newfoundland/Labrador rink from St. John’s, skipped by Stacie Curtis, kept pace with Scheidegger by trouncing Nunavut’s Amie Shackleton (0-3; Iqaluit) 10-3 in eight ends. Curtis’s crew scored three in the third end, stole four in the fourth and got three more in the sixth for a 10-2 lead.

Team MacPhee (Facebook)

In other Draw 5 action, Ontario’s Hollie Duncan (Toronto) outlasted Quebec’s teenage team skipped by Émilia Gagné from Alma 7-5, giving both a 1-2 record. That’s the same as Prince Edward Island and British Columbia after Robyn MacPhee of Charlottetown downed Kesa Van Osch of Nanaimo 9-5.

[PEI lost their opener 11-6 to NL, and then lost 8-6 to Alberta. They play Ontario at 6 p.m. AT in their only game today]

Hope rinks both one win away from PEI Master’s Titles

The rinks skipped by Bill and Sandy Hope will both have two chances to win the PEI Masters Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, on Monday at 10 am and 2 pm at the Charlottetown Curling Club. Their opponents, the defending champion Ted MacFadyen men’s team, and the Shirley Berry women’s foursome would have to win both games to take the championship, while the Hopes each need to win only one game. The MacFadyen rink is from the Silver Fox, while the other three teams playing tomorrow are from Cornwall.

Photo: Shirley Berry (left) and Sandy Hope

The two-team Best of Five women’s event could have been over this afternoon, as two-time defending champion Sandy Hope had won the first two games, but Shirley Berry brought the  series to game four, with a 6-4 win this afternoon, stealing a deuce in the third end  and a single in the sixth, and running Hope out of rocks in the last end.

Photo: Bill Hope

Photo: Ted MacFadyen

Bill Hope captured his second section in the four-team men’s Modified Triple Knockout draw with a 10-5 win over clubmate Paul Arsenault in the “C” final this afternoon, scoring three of those points in the first and, and four of them in the eighth. Hope also won the “A” section, while defending champion MacFadyen won the B. By winning two sections, Hope has a “double life” in Monday’s two-game championship round against MacFadyen.

Winners and runners-up earn the right to advance to the Maritime Masters Curling Championships, at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow Nova Scotia, March 16-18 2018.  The winning Men’s and Women’s team, or the runners-up should they choose not to attend, also earn the right to compete in the 2018 Canadian Masters Curling Championships in BC, April 1-8 at Surrey’s Cloverdale Curling Club and White Rock’s Peace Arch Curling Club.

Bill Hope vs Paul Arsenault in 2 pm Masters Men’s “C” final, Sandy Hope could wrap up Women’s event in same draw

Photo: Sandy Hope

Sandy Hope could wrap up the Best of Five women’s event in that draw with a third win over Shirley Berry. In this morning’s game, Hope stole a single in the fifth end and a deuce in the sixth in a 9-6 win over Berry. The fourth and fifth games, if necessary, go Monday at 10 and 2.

Photo: Paul Arsenault

In the men’s event, Paul Arsenault, trailing 4-2 at the 4th end break this morning, staved off elimination with a 7-5 win over O’Leary’s Clair Sweet, scoring a triple in the fifth end and stealing a single in the sixth en route to the victory and a ticket to the 2 pm “C” final.

Arsenault will be facing the Bill Hope rink, trying to capture their second section final in the modified triple knockout draw. Hope was down 5-2 after 4 ends this morning against defending champion Ted MacFadyen and his squad from the Silver Fox, who had picked up four points in the fourth. Hope scored triples in the fifth and seventh, keeping MacFadyen to a single in the sixth, and stole the final end for a 9-6 win.

If “A” section winner Hope wins the “C” final this afternoon, he would have a big advantage going into the 2 game Monday championship round against “B” section winner MacFadyen, as a win in either Monday game would give him the title, while MacFadyen would have to win both. If Arsenault wins, there would be three separate section winners, and both games would be needed.

P.E.I. skip heading to World Junior Curling Championships (CBC PEI)

Lauren Lenentine was asked to be an alternate for Team Canada at the event in Aberdeen, Scotland

Lauren Lenentine says her role at the world championships will be to support Team Canada and play if she’s called upon. (Submitted by Curling Canada)

A P.E.I. curler will be heading to the World Junior Curling Championships in Scotland as an alternate for Team Canada.

“Wearing the Canadian flag on your back is something that you always dream of. And this is one way that I didn’t expect it to happen,” Lauren Lenentine told CBC’s Island Morning.

She skipped the province’s team at the recent Canadian Junior Curling Championships where it went 5-5.

Lenentine was asked if she wanted to be the alternate for the Nova Scotia team that would be representing Canada at the world championships.

“I’m just kind of there to support them, give them whatever they need and if anything was to happen, I am there to play.” said Lenentine

The world championships begin March 3 in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Ted MacFadyen wins PEI Masters Men’s B Final, Sandy Hope wins 1st Women’s Best of Five game

The defending champion Ted MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox club in Summerside won the “B” section final this afternoon of the Men’s Modified Triple Knockout draw at the PEI Masters Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, taking place at the Charlottetown Curling Club. The Bill Hope rink won the “A” section on Friday. Since no team can now win all three sections, there will be a championship round on Monday.

Photo: Ted MacFadyen directs his team’s rock into the house as Clair Sweet watches

MacFadyen downed the Clair Sweet team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary (with Crapaud’s Dario Zannier subbing for injured second Mike Trudeau) by a 7-1 score this afternoon, with MacFadyen, who calls the game,  Lou Nowlan throwing last rocks, and Earle Proud and Alan Montgomery on front end keeping the  Sweet team off the scoreboard until after the fourth end break, taking a deuce and three consecutive single steals. Sweet was kept to a single in five, but a MacFadyen deuce in six brought the game to handshakes.

Sweet had a high-scoring second half in an 8-2 come-from-behind win over “A” section champ Bill Hope from Cornwall in the morning “B” semi-finals, with Hope leading 2-1 after four ends. Sweet took charge after the break, scoring a triple, a single steal, and a stolen triple for the win.

MacFadyen handed Cornwall’s Paul Arsenault foursome his second loss in the other “B” semi, getting off to a good start with a four-point first end. Arsenault responded with a pair of deuces to tie the match up after three ends, but MacFadyen picked up a deuce for a 6-4 lead at the fourth end break. Arsenault was kept to singles in ends five and seven, while MacFadyen recorded a deuce in six, and had hammer coming home, but did not have to throw his final stone, winning 8-6.

Hope now plays MacFadyen while Arsenault faces Sweet in “C” semi-final games at 10 am Sunday, with the winners playing off in the “C” final at 2 pm. Hope, MacFadyen, and the winner of the “C” final advance to the championship round on Monday at 10 and 2. If either Hope or MacFadyen win the “C” event, they, as the winner of two sections, will have a “double life” in the Monday round, and win the title if they take either game, while their opponent would have to win both.

Photo: Shirley Berry (left), Sandy Hope

Meanwhile, the first game in the two-team, all-Cornwall women’s division Best of Five competition took place Saturday afternoon, with the defending champion Sandy Hope team beating the Shirley Berry rink 9-4. A couple of missed hits by Berry in the third end gave Hope a 3-1 lead. Hope then stole a single in the fourth to lead 4-1 at the half. Berry came back with a deuce and a stolen single in the next two ends, but a triple in seven and a stolen deuce in eight gave Hope the win.

The next two games in the Best of Five go at 10 and 2 on Sunday. If needed, the final two games are scheduled for Monday at 10 and 2.

PENTICTON, B.C. – Four teams are still at the wheel and four fans from the British Columbia’s Okanagan are along for the ride as the revamped Ford Hot Shots is driven in a different direction for the 24th version of the popular curling skills competition.

Alberta skip Casey Scheidegger takes a look inside the 2018 Ford Escape SE that will be going to a lucky fan after Saturday’s final in the 2018 Ford Hot Shots.

And leading the way into Saturday’s final round of the Ford Hot Shots at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling championship at the South Okanagan Events Centre (11:15 a.m. PT), was New Brunswick skipped by Sylvie Robichaud.

Instead of an individual skills contest, like the 23 previous years, the Ford Hot Shots has been converted to a team competition (CLICK HERE for more information) at the Scotties and the Tim Hortons Brier in Regina later this year. Instead of receiving a lease on a new Ford vehicle, the winning team will get $15,000 and a lucky fan will win a two-year lease on a 2018 Ford Escape SE 4WD.

In Friday’s preliminary round, all four team members contributed points on four shots designed by Curling Canada. They include shooters attempting to replicate Northern Ontario skip Al Hackner’s famous shot at the 1985 Brier, a difficult around-the-horn triple takeout, a straight raise and a drag-effect double takeout.

New Brunswick was the top point-getter Friday afternoon with 43 followed by Manitoba and Alberta at 40. Nova Scotia tied with Prince Edward Island for the fourth and final spot at 39 points but got the nod on measurement.

“It was really fun,” said Robichaud. “It was our first time trying all those different kind of shots, so it was fun to make some.

“We were close to making the around-the-horn, just by a little hair or two. I haven’t seen someone do it yet, so it’s really hard.”

Robichaud was looking forward to the final because the cash prize could go a long way to defraying expenses for the team from Moncton.

“It’s great to play for money too (instead of a lease),” said Robichaud. “$15,000 can go a long way, so we’re going for it. It’s a lot tougher (to travel to cashspiels). We have full-time jobs, so getting time off is a little harder for us.”

Robichaud and her New Brunswick team will be playing for Cathy Thompson of Oliver. Penticton’s Arlene Kolundzic will be cheering on Jennifer Jones’s Manitoba squad. Blaine Lodomez of Penticton is paired with Alberta, skipped by Casey Scheidegger, while Mary-Anne Arsenault’s Nova Scotia champions will get support from Ray Turner from Kelowna.

The three fan entrants who don’t win will get a $500 donation to a local charity of their choice.
