Ferguson, MacLean, Pineau, Schut are 2-0 after U16 Opening Day

Two draws are complete, and four teams remain undefeated with 2-0 win-loss records after opening day play at the Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships at the Montague Curling Club. 

In the Boy’s four-team single-pool round robin, the two-time defending champ Mitchell Schut squad from Cornwall, along with the Cruz Pineau team from the Silver Fox in Summerside are still unbeaten, with Schut picking up a 4-1 win over Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan rink and a 10-3 victory over the host club’s Samuel Shaw foursome. Pineau beat Shaw 10-3, and doubled MacMillan 10-5. Unbeaten Pineau and Schut play each other at 10 am Saturday in the final round robin draw, with the winner going into the playoff round in first place, and the other team in second place. MacMillan and Shaw’s game will determine third and fourth. The first place team will play the fourth place team, while the second place rink will play the third-place finisher in the semi-finals at 10 am Sunday, with the winners advancing to the 2 pm final. 

The Rachel MacLean team from Cornwall and the Lauren Ferguson team from Charlottetown, Cornwall, and Crapaud, both at 2-0, have already secured first place in their respective pools and have advanced to the second round of the Girl’s playoffs, as well as having Saturday off, as they have byes in both the 10 am final round-robin matches, and the first round of the playoffs, at 2 pm. 

In action Friday, MacLean won 5-2 over clubmate Clara Jack, and 9-2 over the host club’s Clara McDonald. Ferguson blanked Charlottetown’s Gracie Gaudet, and stole the last end in a 5-4 shading of Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt. The final round-robin draw goes at 10 am Saturday with the rest of the teams all sitting at 0-1, and their results in the final round-robin round determining their positioning in the first round of the playoffs. The second round goes Sunday at 10, with the final at 2 pm.
