Cornwall hosting PEI U18 Ch’ships, starting Friday afternoon

The 2019 Provincial Under 18 Curling Championships take place March 8-11 at the Cornwall Curling Club, with five girl’s and three boy’s teams taking part, including defending girl’s champs the Lauren Ferguson team, and reigning boy’s champs the Mitchell Schut team, both from the host club, and recently returned from participating in the Canada Games.

The other two boy’s teams are the recently-crowned PEI Under 16 champions, the Brayden Snow team from the Silver Fox, and the U16 finalist team, skipped by Chase MacMillan out of Charlottetown. All five girl’s teams are from Cornwall, and include the Sydney Howatt, Clara Jack (U16 finalists), Rachel MacLean (U16 champs) and Emily Sanderson rinks, in addition to Ferguson.
Both the boy’s and girl’s sections play modified triple knockout draws, with the girl’s teams starting Friday at 2 and 6 pm, and the Schut and MacMillan boys teams hitting the ice at 6 pm, while the Snow team opens against the winner on Saturday at 10 am.

The winners from each of the three triple knockout sections will advance to the two-game championship round on Monday at 10 am and 2 pm. With the modified format, section winners drop down to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. A double section winner will have a “double life” in the championship round, winning the event if they take either game, while their opponent would have to win both.

This year’s winning teams advance to the third-annual Canadian Under-18  Boys and Girls Curling Championships, to be played April 2-7 at the Glen Allan Recreation Complex in Sherwood Park, Alta.

Live, end by end results from the provincial event will be available at PEICurling.com.

Explanation for MA/WA and MB/WB:
1. One team wins all three qualifiers: Championship Round is not required.

2. One team wins two qualifiers. They play in both X and Z (and win the event if they win either game), the other winner plays in Y (and has to win both games).

3. Three separate winners: the team that played in the most qualifying games* plays in Z and the other winners play off in X and Y. If there is a tie in number of qualifying games played, then the team that qualified earliest goes to Z and the other two teams play off in X and Y.

*Qualifying games have game number/letter highlighted in yellow on the schedule.
