The Nick Blanchard rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club has won the first of three qualifiers for the championship round, and will take on the two-time defending champion Jamie Newson team from the Silver Fox club in Summerside at 10 am Sunday in the second qualifier at the PEI Mixed Curling Championship in O’Leary.
Blanchard beat the Alex MacFadyen squad from Charlottetown 7-5 in the “A” Qualifier on Saturday afternoon, and then downed the Philip MacDonald rink from Montague 8-1 in his “B” semi-final match, while Newson edged MacFadyen by a 6-5 score to advance to the “B” qualifier game.
The “C” semi-finals go at 2 pm Sunday, with the “C” Qualifier game at 6 pm. If Blanchard wins all three qualifiers, there will be no championship round. Otherwise, it will take place at 2 pm Monday and, if necessary at 6 pm.
The winning team will advance to the 2021 Canadian Mixed Championship, Nov. 7-15, 2020, at the Canmore Golf and Curling Club in Alberta.
Nine teams representing five curling clubs are taking part in the PEI Mixed Championship.
