Lots of Islanders will be in the money in Nova Scotia cashspiels this afternoon as they have advanced to the finals in events in Halifax and Chester.

At the Dave Jones Stanhope Simpson Insurance Cashspiel at the Halifax Mayflower club, the Brad Gushue rink, which includes Islander Brett Gallant, will be taking on Stuart Thompson of Halifax at 1:30, after Gushue beat Andrew Simpson of Halifax 6-1 and Thompson beat Haligonian Jamie Murphy 7-5 in the semis. Team Gushue is streaming the final live on their Facebook page. The winner gets $4000, with the second-place team going home with $3000.
On the women’s side of the event, Team Birt from the Montague and Cornwall curling clubs will be facing Halifax’s Jill Brothers rink, which includes PEI native Erin Carmody, in the final, after Birt edged Theresa Breen of Halifax 8-7, and Brothers beat Tanya Hilliard of Dartmouth 12-7 in the semi-finals. The winner gets $3000, with the runner-up team going home with $2000.
In this afternoon’s finals at the Oak Island Junior Cashspiel in Chester, Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut foursome are taking on two-time defending champs Team Weagle from the host club, while Team Taylour Stevens of Halifax, which includes Spring Valley PEI native Lauren Ferguson, plays Melodie Forsythe and her Moncton rink in the junior women’s championship game. Forsythe beat Emilie Proulx of Lower Sackville 7-1, while Stevens doubled Marin Callaghan of Halifax 4-2 in the semis. Schut edged Adam McEachern of Halifax 6-5 in the semis, while Weagle doubled Nick Mosher of Halifax 8-4.
