PEI Master's Championships


Eleven Men's teams and six Women's teams took part in the 2001 Provincial Master's Championship from January 8-11 2001 at the Cornwall Curling Club. Master's curlers are 60 years of age and older. Winners and Runners-up go to the Maritime Master's Championships, Feb. 12-17 at the Beaver Curling Club in Moncton NB.


Wayne Gardiner repeats as Men's winner

Wayne Gardiner of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht club defeated Reg Peters of the Charlottetown Curling Club 5-2 Wednesday morning to win the Provincial Masters Men's curling final at the Cornwall Curling Club.

Gardiner, who also won last year, and Peters will both represent PEI in Moncton next month at the Maritime Master's Championship, along with Women's Champion Wanda MacLean of the Silver Fox, and runner-up Margie Jardine of Charlottetown.

The Silver Fox club is off to a great start this season, winning the Men's and Women's Masters and Men's and Women's Juniors championships.

Gardiner's team-mates are Carl Delaney mate, Earl Hayes second, and Raymond Thompson lead.
Other members of the Peters rink are Jim MacLean mate, John Baird second, and Jim Smith lead.


Reg Peters and Wayne Gardiner in Men's Final

Defending champion Wayne Gardiner of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside defeated clubmate Louis Walsh 8-5 Thursday afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club, to advance to the Provincial Men's Master's Final. The Men's final has been moved to 10 am Wednesday Jan. 17, with Gardiner facing Reg Peters of the Charlottetown Curling Club. Gardiner handed Peters his first loss earlier Thursday.

Wanda MacLean of the Silver Fox won the Women's title Thursday morning, with a 7-2 victory over Charlottetown's Margie Jardine.

Peters, Gardiner, MacLean and Jardine all advance to the Maritime Masters Championships Feb. 12-17 at the Beaver Curling Club in Moncton NB.

Wanda MacLean rink wins Women's Championship

The Wanda MacLean rink of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club captured the PEI Masters Women's Championship Thursday morning at the Cornwall Curling Club, defeating Charlottetown's Margie Jardine 7-2.

Both rinks advance to the Maritime Master's Championships in Moncton.

In Men's play, hometown favorite Alfred (Chick) Morrison was eliminated, losing 7-3 to Louis Walsh of the Silver Fox.

Reg Peters of Charlottetown took his first loss, 7-2 at the hands of defending champion Wayne Gardiner from the Silver Fox.

Gardiner meets Walsh at 1 PM. The winner plays Peters in the Men's Championship Friday morning at 9.

4 Men's, 2 Women's Teams left at end of Day 3 in PEI Masters

Reg Peters (4-0) of the Charlottetown Curling Club, and Wanda MacLean (3-0), of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, are the only undefeated teams going into day 4 of the PEI Masters Championships, taking place at the Cornwall Curling Club.

In the 1 pm draw on Wednesday, Peters handed Alfred (Chick) Morrison of the host club his first loss, in a closely-fought 5-4 contest.

Fred Fall of Crapaud fell to defending champion Wayne Gardiner, of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, 9-1, and is eliminated from further play.

Louis Walsh, also from the Fox, eliminated Harvey Poole of Charlottetown 8-5.

In the standings, Peters is at 4-0 is followed by Wayne Gardiner at 3-1, and Morrison and Walsh at 2-1.

Helen Robbins of Montague started off well, with a deuce in the first end, but failed to score again, as Margie Jardine of Charlottetown rebounded with a single and three deuces before the game was called off at 7-2.

Wanda MacLean at 3-0 and Jardine at 3-1 are the only teams left on the Women's side.

The 9 am draw on Thursday sees Peters take on Gardiner, and Walsh meet Morrison. Winners play at 1 pm. If Peters wins at both 9 and 1, he wins the championship, otherwise, a deciding game will be played Friday at 9 am.

On the women's side, the two remaining teams face off Thursday at 9 am. If MacLean wins, she takes the title. If Jardine wins, a deciding game will be played at 1 p.m.
Both winner and runner-up in both divisions advance to the Maritime Master's in Moncton.


Wednesday 9am results:

The PEI Provincial Masters Championships are continuing today at the Cornwall Curling Club.
In the 9 am draw, Harvey Poole of Charlottetown eliminated clubmate Henry MacWilliams by a score of 8-3.
Reg Peters of Charlottetown downed Louis Walsh of the Silver Fox club, also by an 8-3 score.

On the Women's side:
Wanda MacLean of the Silver Fox kept her unbeaten streak alive with a 10-2 victory over Helen Robbins.
Audrey Thompson of the Maple Leaf club in O'leary is out, after losing 9-2 to Margie Jardine of Charlottetown.


Tuesday 3pm results and recap at end of Day 2:

Day two is complete at the Provincial Mens and Ladies Masters Curling Championships at the Cornwall Curling Club.
On the Men's side, the Alfred (Chick) Morrison team of Cornwall, and Ray Peters of the Charlottetown Curling Club share the lead at 2-0.
Defending champion Wayne Gardiner of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club was defeated by the Peters rink 6-3 in today's play. Action continues Wednesday with nine men's teams still in contention.
Peters meets Louis Walsh of the Silver Fox at 9 am, with the winner facing Morrison at 1 pm.

On the ladies side, Wanda MacLean of the Silver Fox is at 2-0, while Helen Robbins of Montague is at 1-0. Audrey Thompson of the Maple Leaf club in O'Leary, and Margie Jardine of Charlottetown remain alive at 1-1 and face off at 9am on Wednesday. Also at 9, MacLean takes on Robbins. Both teams are currently undefeated, and would have to lose twice to be out of this double-knockout event.

Tuesday Results 9 and 11:30 am draws:

Three teams have been eliminated after the 1st two draws on Tuesday at the double-knockout PEI Masters Curling Championships at the Cornwall Curling Club.

At 9 am:
In the Women's division, Charlottetown's Joan Cook is out, losing to O'Leary's Audrey Thompson 8-4.
Wandy MacLean of the Silver Fox downed Gladys Wright from the host Cornwall Club 9-5.

On the Men's side, Louis Walsh of the Silver Fox defeated James Baglole of the Maple Leaf club in O'Leary 8-6, while Lorne MacPhail of the host club picked up his first win, eliminating Peter Stark of the Charlottetown Curling Club 7-5.

Two Men's games were played at 11:30, with Henry MacWilliams of the Charlottetown club eliminating Bob Maynard from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht club 9-6. Charlottetown's Reg Peters doubled Wayne Gardiner of the Fox 6-3.


Monday Results:

Two draws were held on Monday January 8th as the PEI Provincial Master's Championships got underway at the Cornwall Curling Club.

In the 1 pm draw, James Baglole of O'Leary defeated Lorne MacPhail of the host club 8-4.
Defending champion Wayne Gardiner of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club downed Peter Stark of the Charlottetown Curling Club 9-3.
On the women's side, it was Gladys Wright of the Cornwall Club over Audrey Thompson of the Maple Leaf club in O'leary 8-5, and Wanda MacLean of the Silver Fox edging Joan Cook of the Charlottetown club 7-6.

At 3:30, Reg Peters of the Charlottetown Curling Club beat club-mate Henry MacWilliams 9-7, while Fred Fall of Crapaud downed Bob Maynard of the Silver Fox 7-1.
Cornwall's Alfred (Chick) Morrison defeated Charlottetown's Harvey Poole 8-2. In the only women's game, last year's champion Helen Robbins of Montague trounced Margie Jardine of the Charlottetown Curling Club 11-0.
