Watts qualified for the Monday championship round by winning the third and final qualifier game, the “C”,  on Sunday evening, beating “A” qualifier MacKenzie 7-4 in that game. MacKenzie beat Jamie Newson and this team from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox 6-2 to win the “A”, while Newson took the “B” with an 11-4 win over Watts.

The first game of the championship round saw Watts beat Newson 5-3 to advance to the final against MacKenzie. Defending champion Veronica Smith and her Charlottetown team went 1-4 in the nine-team event.

The PEI championship curling season wraps up this weekend with the KFC Under 13 at the Silver Fox in Summerside, and the Travelers Curling Club Championship at Western Community in Alberton, both starting on Friday morning, with live results available at PEICurling.com.

The “A” section winner, Tyler MacKenzie from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, gets a bye to the 6 pm final, and awaits the winner of the 2 pm semi-final match between B section winner Jamie Newson from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox, and “C” winner Dennis Watts from Charlottetown and the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

MacKenzie won the “A” final on Saturday afternoon, beating the Jamie Newson team from 6-2, aided by a 4 point 4th end.  Newson then downed Watts 11-4 in the B final at 10 on Sunday, shutting the game down early with a six-point fifth end. Watts then beat MacKenzie 7-4 to take the Sunday evening C final.  The PEI Mixed winner advances to the 2018 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, to be played in Manitoba, at the Swan River Curling Club, Nov. 12-18, 2017.

Four teams still unbeaten at PEI Mixed – playing in “A” semis at 10 am Sat.

Two draws are in the books at the nine-team Provincial Mixed Curling Championship at the Cornwall Curling Club, with four teams remaining unbeaten, and advancing to the 10 am Saturday “A” section semi-finals of the modified triple knockout event. These teams are the Matthew MacDonald rink from Montague, and the Tyler MacKenzie foursome from Charlottetown, who will square off in one semi, and the Jamie Newson rink from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox and the Dennis Watts team from Charlottetown and Western Community clubs, who will play off in the other, with the winners advancing to the “A” final at 2 pm Saturday.

In one of the most closely-fought games of the day, Tyler MacKenzie edged defending champ Veronica Smith and her Charlottetown rink 8-7.

Teams with one loss and competing in the B section are Kyle Holland and Veronica Smith, both from the Charlottetown Curling Complex who are facing off at 10 am Saturday, as are Bill Hope (Cornwall, Charlottetown) and Calvin Smith (Silver Fox, Crapaud).

Corey Miller and his Silver Fox and Charlottetown team have two losses, trying to stave off elimination down in the “C” event.

Draws on Saturday and Sunday are at 10 am and 2 and 6 pm. The championship round (unless at team wins all 3 modified triple knockout sections) goes Monday at 2 and, if needed 6 pm.

The winning team will advance to the 2018 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, to be played in Manitoba, at the Swan River Curling Club, Nov. 12-18, 2017.

Cornwall to host 2017 PEI Mixed (Fours)

The Cornwall Curling Club is hosting the 2017 PEI Mixed curling championship from March 3-6, with nine teams competing in the original four player Mixed event. Defending champions are the team of Veronica Smith, Tyler Smith, Sabrina Smith, and Dylan Lowery. The Smith sisters are back this year on a team with Sam Ramsay and Connor MacPhee, while Tyler Smith (no relation) is on a team skipped by Jamie Newson.

Teams will play a modified triple knockout format, advancing section winners to a two game championship round on Monday March 6. With the modified format, section winners also compete in subsequent sections, and could win more than one. If a team wins three sections, they will be declared the winner after the third section final on Sunday evening. If a team wins two sections, they will have a “double-life” in the championship round and win the event if they take either game, while their opponent, who won one section, would have to win both matches.

The winning team will advance to the 2018 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, to be played in Manitoba, at the Swan River Curling Club, Nov. 12-18, 2017.

Explanation for P1/A and P2/B:
1. One team wins all three qualifiers: Championship Round is not required.
2. One team wins two qualifiers. They play in both X and Z (and win the event if they win either game), the other winner plays in Y (and has to win both games).
3. Three separate winners: the team that played in the most qualifying games* plays in Z and the other winners play off in X and Y. If there is a tie in number of qualifying games played, then the team that qualified earliest goes to Z and the other two teams play off in X and Y.
