John Likely rink earns bye to Labatt Tankard final

The Charlottetown Curling Club rink of John Likely, Phil Gorveatt, Mark Butler and Mike Dillon, with 5th player Robert Campbell, edged their clubmates the Ted MacFadyen rink by a 5-4 score on Saturday evening to win the Page 1-2 game at the Labatt Tankard Final Eight Provincial Men’s Curling Championships in Montague. The win advances the Likely squad to the 3 pm Sunday final. MacFadyen stole a single point in the first end in the low-scoring game, but Likely blanked the second end and took a single in the third, followed by a steal of another single in the fourth, giving him a one-point lead which he maintained as the teams traded singles for the rest of the game.

Rod MacDonald blanked Charlottetown clubmate Bill Hope by a 7-0 score in the Page 3-4 game, stealing a deuce in the fifth end, followed by a triple in the sixth to bring the game to an early conclusion.

MacDonald now meets MacFadyen in the semi-final, Sunday morning at 10, with the winner advancing to the 3 pm final against Likely.

The Labatt Tankard champion will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 7-15 in Calgary.
