Suzanne Birt rink to represent PEI at national Scotties in Charlottetown
Jan. 31-The Charlottetown Curling Club rink of Suzanne Birt, third Shelly Bradley, second Robyn MacPhee and lead Leslie MacDougall will be PEI's representatives at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 19-27 at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
Birt stole a triple in the 10th end of an extremely close game this afternoon at a packed Cornwall Curling Club, to defeat defending champion, Canadian silver medallist, and clubmate Kathy O'Rourke by a 7-3 score to win the championship. Birt had won two sections of the triple knockout event, giving her the opportunity to win the title with either today's afternoon or evening game, and she succeeded with this afternoon's low-scoring match, where neither team recorded more than a single point until the last end. Other members of the runner-up O'Rourke team are Erin Carmody, who throws last rock, third Geri-Lynn Ramsay, and lead Tricia Affleck.
