Eddie MacKenzie rink wins Labatt Tankard

Feb. 8-Charlottetown's Eddie MacKenzie, and his rink of third Mike Gaudet, second Mike Dillon, and lead Alex MacFadyen, with coach Blair Weeks, beat their clubmates, the John Likely foursome by an 8-6 score this afternoon at Summerside's Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club, to win the Labatt Tankard PEI Men's Curling Championship, and a ticket to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 5-13 in London Ontario. It's the second Tankard victory for MacKenzie,  who played third for this year's third stone, Mike Gaudet, when they won back in 1994. Gaudet also won, as skip, in 2004. Second Mike Dillon was previously on three winning teams, skipped by Rod MacDonald and Robert Campbell.

MacKenzie had to come from behind to win today's game, trailing 5-2 after five ends against Likely, but came out firing in the second half, following a deuce in six with a stolen deuce in seven, and a steal of one in eight to grab a 7-5 lead. The teams traded singles in the last two ends to give MacKenzie the win. Other members of the runner-up Likely foursome are Kyle Stevenson, Mark Butler, and Doug MacGregor.

15 teams began play Thursday in this year's event.

Likely stays alive with C final win at Labatt Tankard

Feb. 7-The Eddie MacKenzie rink has to win any one of the final three games against Charlottetown clubmate John Likely at the Labatt Tankard being played at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside in order to win the Labatt Tankard.  Likely, however didn't let that happen in the first game, the C final of the triple-knockout PEI men's championship, staying alive by downing MacKenzie 9-1 in a game that was all but over in the fourth end.  Likely, whose rink includes Kyle Stevenson, Mark Butler, and Doug MacGregor, had hammer in the first end, and scored a deuce. The second end was blanked. Likely stole a deuce in the third, and stole five points in the fourth end to build up an 8-0 lead. Each team picked up a point in the later ends and MacKenzie, and his rink of Mike Gaudet, Mike Dillon, and Alex MacFadyen called it quits after seven ends.

This sets up the two game championship round between A and B section winner MacKenzie, and C winner Likely, at 2 and 7 pm on Tuesday. A MacKenzie win in either game will give him the championship, while Likely would have to win both games. The Labatt Tankard winner will move on to play in the Tim Hortons Brier, March 5-13 in London Ont. 15 teams began play Thursday in the Labatt Tankard.

Rules:
Draw for hammer: if pin is covered another draw will be made immediately (if the opposing team covers the pin with their first draw, then the 2nd draw is used).
Practice will be a maximum length of nine minutes. Each team will throw eight rocks up and eight rocks back on the sheet they are schedule for (not a CCA rule - this is to try to keep the ice from breaking down too early).
Coin flip will be made 30 minutes prior to game time. Winner of coin toss will have choice of rock colour or second practice. Teams not present for coin toss will forfeit these choices, and teams in attendance will have last practice AND rock colour.
