DeWolfe rink repeats at U16 boy’s winners, Doyle team comes on strong at end to win girl’s

The Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 Curling Championship concluded this afternoon at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, with the Donald DeWolfe team from Cornwall repeating as champs in the three team boy’s division, while the Maria Doyle rink from the Silver Fox club in Summerside, who went 0-3 in the four team girl’s round robin, came on strong in the championship round to win the girl’s event.

DeWolfe who finished round robin play in first place, with a 3-1 win-loss record, beat the Alex Gallant rink from the Fox by an 8-3 score in the boy’s final, scoring a triple in the third end, and deuces in ends five and seven. Gallant and Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut  were tied at 1 win and two losses going into the morning draw, but a five point fifth end was a key factor Gallant’s  9-7 win over the young Schut team, and advanced them to the final.

Other members of the winning DeWolfe team are third Jacob Wilkins, second Logan Maker, and lead Nick Johnston, with Lori Robinson taking on the coaching duties. The Rod MacDonald and Wendy Gallant-coached Gallant squad includes third stone Connor Lilly, second AJ Cahill, and lead Luke Arsenault.

The girl’s semi-finals this morning saw the undefeated (3-0) first place team from Cornwall, skipped by Kristie Rogers, taking on the last place Doyle rink, with Doyle, down 5-1 after three, tying the game with deuces in ends four and five. The sixth was blanked, and the teams traded deuces to go into an extra end, which Doyle won by a single point for a 7-6 final. The other semi saw second place Lauren Moerike and her Charlottetown/Cornwall team (2-1) down Crapaud’s Sierra Clyke rink (1-2) by a 10-3 score, taking 5 points in the first end, then stealing 1 and 2 points to lead 8-0 in a game that lasted only until the fifth end.

This set up the Moerike vs Doyle final, with Moerike taking a first end deuce with hammer, but Doyle responding with a single and steals of 3 and 1 point to take a 5-2 lead at the 4th end break. Moerike then took the lead with four points in the fifth end, but Doyle took singles in the next three ends for an 8-6 victory.

Rounding out the winning Maria Doyle team are third Maddison Moore, 2nd Gabrielle Gallant, and lead Abbie MacDonald, with coach Don Vickerson.  Lauren Lenentine, Tati Kelly, and Rachel O’Connor, with coach Kevin Moerike, complete the runner-up Moerike foursome.
