Mitchell Schut and Katie Shaw rinks win PEI Under 16 titles

Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut rink won their final game in the three-team double round robin boy’s division, this afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, beating the Cruz Pineau foursome from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside by an 8-3 score, and clinching their second PEI Under 16 boy’s title. The evening match, between Pineau, and Cornwall’s Chase MacMillan rink, became a battle for second place, with MacMillan winning 6-4.

Schut finished with a 3-1 win-loss record, losing only their opener, 4-3 to MacMillan, while MacMillan went 2-2 and Pineau finished at 1-3.  Other members of Team Schut are third Colin MacKenzie, second stone Michael MacEwen, lead Liam Kelly, with alternate Nick Johnston and coach Nancy Yeo. Johnston, who was also on the 2014 and 2015 U16 championship teams, filled in for MacKenzie, who was leaving on a school trip, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the girl’s championship round resulted in some very exciting games, with the Rachel MacLean rink from Cornwall, who were undefeated in the round robin, losing in the semi-finals to their clubmates the Alexis Burris team, who stole two points in an extra end for an 8-6 win, while Charlottetown’s Katie Shaw foursome downed Cornwall’s Lauren Ferguson team, playing with only three players, 13-3. This set up the final between Burris and Shaw, with Shaw stealing the eighth end to tie the game, and then stealing a point in the extra for a 7-6 win.

The Curl PEI Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships, with boy’s and girl’s divisions for curlers under the age of 16 years, are scheduled for the three sheet Western Community Curling Club in Alberton from March 4-5. Three boys and six girl’s teams are participating.

Last year’s champions were the Lauren Lenentine and Mitchell Schut rinks from Cornwall. Schut, who recently finished as runner-up in the Under 18 championship, is back with the same team this year, while Lenentine is now competing in the older divisions and has won both the Under 18 and Under 21 championships. Also entered are the U18 girl’s runners-up — the Rachel MacLean team, also from Cornwall.

This year’s three boy’s teams will play a Double Round Robin (DRR) format (4 games each), with the winner determined from the DRR with no playoff. The ranking will be determined first by win/loss, then head to head between tied teams, and finally cumulative last stone draw results.

The six girl’s rinks are divided into two three-team pools (B & C), and will play a single round-robin in their pool (2 games), plus a championship round.
