4 point 7th ends cement O’Connor Glass U16 wins for Mackay, DeWolfe

The Kaleigh Mackay rink from the Crapaud Community Curling Club and the Montague Curling Club, and the Donald DeWolfe foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club both scored four points in the seventh end in wins over the defending champions in the finals of the O’Connor Glass Provincial Under 16 Curling Championships, which wrapped up this evening at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

Mackay, whose rink includes third Danielle Collings, second Alyssa Wright, and lead Kaleigh Peters-Ellis, with coach A.J. Campbell, was leading 3-2 going into the seventh end, scoring four points in a 7-2 win over the defending champion Lauren Lenentine rink from the Cornwall Curling Club. Other members of the runner-up Lenentine team include third Rachel O’Connor, second, Elly Whitney-Coulter, and lead Breanne Burgoyne, with coach Pat Quilty. Mackay went undefeated in the event, winning the A Qualifier out of the triple knockout 8-5 over Lenentine to advance to the Page A/B game, where she again faced Lenentine, winning 7-5, and earning a bye to the final. Lenentine beat Lisa Moerike and her Charlottetown Curling Complex rink 7-2 in the B qualifier, going on to defeat clubmate Kristie Rogers 13-5 in the Page B/C game, and coming from behind with a triple in the eighth and a single in the extra end to edge Moerike 9-8 in the semi-final to set up the final against Mackay.

DeWolfe, and his team of third Avery Wells, second Cameron Jenkins, and lead Nick Johnston, with coach Aleya Quilty, was trailing 4-3 in the boy’s final against MacFadyen, pulling ahead with the four point seventh end, running the Summerside team out of rocks in the final end for a 7-4 final score. Other members of the runner-up MacFadyen rink are third Tyler Smith, second stone Matthew MacDonald, and lead Ben Gardiner, with coaches Kelly MacDonald and Kevin Smith. MacFadyen went undefeated at 4-0 in round robin play, with DeWolfe going 3-1, losing 12-5 to MacFadyen in their encounter. DeWolfe beat 3rd place (2-2) Alex Gallant and his Silver Fox team team 11-1 in the semi-final, following a steal of five in the fourth end with stolen deuces in five and six to end the game early, and advance the Cornwall team to the final against the defending champ.

Eight girls’ rinks and five boy’s teams took part in this year’s U16 event.
