Playoff round set at Maritime Junior Cashspiel in S’Side

The semi-finals get underway at 9 this morning in the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club’s annual Maritime Junior Fall Cash Fling. Defending champions Steve Burgess of Fredericton NB and Sarah Clow of Cornwall PEI have both advanced to the money round. 

In the junior women’s division, Brittani Jeans of the Gage Curling Club in Oromocto plays Mary Myketyn-Driscoll of the Dartmouth Curling Club in one game, while Summerside’s Erin Carmody, playing out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, takes on Cornwall’s Clow rink in the other semi.

In the junior men’s section, Colton Steele of the Dartmouth club meets Fredericton’s Burgess, while the Sam Ramsay foursome, playing out of the Crapaud Community Curling Club, will face the Matthew Nabuurs team from Montague.

Round robin play wrapped up Saturday night. In the Junior women’s section, Jeans had a 5-0 win-loss record, and Carmody went 4-1 in one pool, while four teams finished at 3-2 in the other, with Clow and Myketyn-Driscoll advancing to the semi-final round. Emily Dwyer of Dartmouth and Lindsay Hughes of Charlottetown were the other teams at 3-2. In the junior men’s division, Steele went 5-0 while Nabuurs had a 4-1 record in one pool, while Ramsay also went 5-0, with Burgess finishing at 4-1 in the other.

Finals go at 1 this afternoon, with the winning teams receiving $500, the second place rinks pocketing $250, and the other semi-finalists going home with $100. 24 teams, equally divided between junior men and women, took part in this annual event.

Many of the teams from this event will also be participating in the Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnston Junior Cashspiel, which gets underway Friday at the Cornwall Curling Club, with 20 teams entered.
