MacFadyen, Currie looking to defend at PEI Seniors

The 2009 Provincial Seniors Curling Championships, sponsored by Credit Unions of PEI, take place January 15-19 at the Cornwall Curling Club, with 15 men’s teams and 8 women’s rinks entered, including defending champions Ted MacFadyen from the Charlottetown Curling Club, and Barb Currie from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, taking part.

MacFadyen has six seniors championships to his credit, in addition to five provincial men’s titles MacFadyen’s long-time teammate Sandy Foy is on the injury list, so Bill Hope is filling in at second for this event. Another favorite this year has to be Peter Gallant, winner of the last two Labatt Tankard men’s championships as skip, along with seven others in the third or second position. He is joined by Peter MacDonald, Tom Fetterly, and Rod MacDonald as he makes the move to the Senior ranks.
Others to watch out for include 2003 Seniors champ Charlie Wilkinson of Charlottetown, who won the PEI Legion championship Monday night, and 2007  Seniors winner Mel Bernard.
Half of the eight women’s teams have won the event before, with Currie winning it four times, Shirley Berry of Cornwall twice, and Diane MacKay of Cornwall and Paula Creamer of Charlottetown once each. Scotties Tournament of Hearts veteran Kim Dolan is entered in this event for the first time, and also has an entry in the Scotties thie year.

Play gets underway Thursday morning at 8, and wraps up with the finals Monday at 3 pm. The men will play a double-knockout format, while the women will be playing a new format that the PEI Curling Association is piloting with this event – a triple knockout with a Page playoff. This format, popular in cashspiels, will advance separate winners from A, B and two C divisions into a four game championship round, with the A and B winners playing off, and the winner going directly to the final, while the loser plays in the semi-final against the winner of a game between the two C division champs for the other spot in the final.

The winning teams from this event, for curlers age 50 and over, will advance to the Canadian Seniors, March 21-28 at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.
