Canadians win openers at World Juniors

It took an extra end for Canada’s Brett Gallant rink to edge Norway’s Kristian Rolvsjord team by a 6-5 score in their opening game at the World Junior Curling Championships in Vancouver. The Gallant foursome play Sweden and Switzerland tomorrow.

In the junior women’s section, Canada’s Kaitlyn Lawes had little trouble against Denmark, stealing a triple in the second and scoring four in the fourth end in a 10-2 game that went only six ends. Lawes faces two-time defending champion Eva Muirhead of Scotland at 11:30 Atlantic tonight.  18-year old Muirhead also won the Scottish women’s title this year, the first time in Scottish curling history that a skip has captured both the junior and women’s titles in the same season.
