Sport PEI awards banquet goes tonight – curling has two finalists

Sport P.E.I. hosts its gala night of the year, the 35th annual awards banquet, tonight at the Rodd Royalty Inn in Charlottetown.

There are two finalists in the sport of curling.

The Ted MacFadyen rink is a finalist for the Friendly Pharmacy masters athlete of the year award, while Al Ledgerwood is in the running for Coach of the Year.

Tonight sees Sport PEI hosting its gala night of the year, the 35th Annual Awards Banquet, to be held at the Rodd Royalty Inn, Charlottetown.

 

Over the past number of weeks, finalists have been announced in various categories, and in addition to the awards honouring athletes, administrators, coaches, officials and teams, the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Award will be presented, given to the athlete who has been judged the most outstanding in the year 2008.

 

The President’s award will also be presented, given to an individual who has made significant contributions to amateur sport over a number of years, and there will also be an award from the Premier of Prince Edward Island to the Sports Organisation of the Year.

 

Co-hosting this year’s event are JoAnne Holden, and Matt Rainnie, host of C.B.C’s Main Street show. Special guests include Lieutenant Governor Barbara Hagerman; Minister for Community, Cultural Affairs and Labour, Carolyn Bertram, and Mayor of the City of Charlotteotwn, Clifford Lee.     

 

The evening will begin with registration at 6.15pm, with the awards presented after dinner, which commences at 7.00pm. Tickets for the banquet are now sold out.

Aliant Senior Male Athlete of the Year: Billy Bridges (sledge hockey), Jared Connaughton (athletics) and Jeff Ellsworth (softball)

 

Senior Female Athlete of the Year: Katie Baker (field hockey), Angela Drane (golf) and Kara Grant (modern pentathlon)

 

Junior Male Athlete of the Year: Mark Arendz (para-nordic skiing and biathlon), Matthieu D’Amour (gymnastics) and Brandon Gormley (hockey)

 

Rodd Hotels and Resorts Junior Female Athlete of the Year: Paige Crowell (swimming), Amy Kneebone (goalball) and Stephanie Ramsay (hockey) 

 

Friendly Pharmacy Masters Athlete of the Year: Collin Affleck (karate), Ted MacFadyen Curling Rink, Boston Pizza Molson Soccer Masters

 

PEI Mutual Official of the Year: Rob Anderson (basketball), Justine Lewis (soccer) and Jeff MacRae (gymnastics)

 

Island Petroleum Team of the Year: Avondale Islanders (soccer), Jeff Rand/Brian Hansen (beach volleyball) and PEI Team Tennis.

 

Coach of the Year: John Diamond (soccer), Al Ledgerwood (curling) and Jim Rand (gymnastics)

 

Amalgamated Dairies Ltd Administrator of the Year: Mark Bowlan (cycling), Peter Howatt (Special Olympics) and Mark MacDougall (football)

 

Paperflow Intercollegiate Male Athlete of the Year: Paul Craig (soccer), Josh MacDonald (football) and Kurt McCormack (athletics)
