Member of PEI’s 1st Canadian Ch’ship curling team passes away

Doug George passed away on Tuesday at Whisperwood Villa at the age of 97.  He played second on the Dr. Wen MacDonald rink who won the 1970-71 Canadian Senior Men’s Curling Championship at the Halifax Forum. Other members of the team, PEI’s first Canadian curling champions, were third John Squarebriggs, and lead Danny O’Rourke. The team was inducted into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame.  George was also a Provincial Legion champion, playing third for Art Ballem in 1966.

 Funeral service will take place Friday at 11 am at the Belvedere Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to KidSport Charlottetown (www.sportpei.pe.ca).
