CHARLOTTETOWN, (IIS)– The Charlottetown Curling Club was established in 1895 and now has 450 members. Thanks to $104,600 from the Province’s Island Community Fund, this aging facility is undergoing major improvements.
“Curling is one of the most popular winter sports in Prince Edward Island, said Minister Carolyn Bertram. “The Charlottetown Club has been a developing ground for many athletes who have gone on to compete at the national and world levels, including Robyn MacPhee’s Team who recently represented PEI at the Scott Tournament of Hearts and Brett Gallant’s Team who became Canadian Jr. Champions and went on to win a silver medal at the Worlds. The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to support the Charlottetown Curling Club as they strive to better serve curlers and our One Island Community.”
As part of the project, a Jet Ice System was recently installed in the facility to enable the Club to make ice faster and use less energy. A new roof is currently being installed and over the new few months the Club will receive a new ice plant and lighting upgrades.
The Charlottetown Curling Club has five lanes of ice to provide winter entertainment for the community. Their programs are designed for anyone from age 6 and up. “Our members and the community are very excited about the funding and the resulting renovations,” said Rob Warren, Manager of the Charlottetown Curling Club. “I want to thank the Provincial Government for their support; this project would certainly not have been possible without it.
Committed to in Budget 2008, the Island Community Fund represents a provincial investment of $27.5 million towards the infrastructure needs of Prince Edward Island communities. The Fund consists of two components – a small projects component, and a strategic initiatives component. Eligible categories of funding under this program include Community Safety and Security, Recreation, and Cultural infrastructure not funded under the current programs. A high priority will also be given to projects which support strategic initiatives for the entire province.
