Brett Gallant junior team wins Silver Fox Cashspiel

The Brett Gallant team from the Charlottetown Curling Club beat their clubmates, the  Robert Campbell foursome, by a 7-4 score to win this afternoon’s final at the  Labatt/Superstore/Journal-Pioneer Atlantic Curling Tour cashspiel at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. The World junior silver medallists trailed 4-2 after five ends of play, but followed a deuce in the sixth end with a steal of two in the seventh, and a stolen single in the eighth in the come-from-behind victory.  Gallant’s teammates are Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen.  Playing with Campbell were Steve Burgess, Jamie Newson, and Rob Doherty.

Campbell doubled the defending champion Eddie MacKenzie rink by an 8-4 score in the semi-finals, while Gallant stole four ends in a row in a 7-3 win over Mark Armstrong of Rothsay NB.

In this morning’s quarter-finals, MacKenzie beat Summerside native Dave Nowlan and his Fredericton NB team by a 6-2 score, Campbell beat Summerside’s Mel Bernard rink, PEI’s Senior Men’s champs, 5-2, Armstrong defeated tournament organizer Rod MacDonald and his Charlottetown team by a 7-5 score, recording a deuce in the extra end, and Gallant doubled Jamie Brennan of Fredericton NB 6-3.

In round robin play, Nowlan was 4-0 in the A pool, with MacDonald going 3-1. Gallant and Bernard were both 3-1 in the B Pool, while Armstrong went undefeated in the C pool, while MacKenzie had one loss. Brennan was 4-0, while Campbell went 3-1 in the D pool.

The Atlantic Curling Tour wraps up with the Hub City Shootout in Moncton, which gets underway Thursday night,  followed by the ACT championship, also in Moncton, January 1-3.  MacDonald, MacKenzie, and Campbell are all entered in the Hub City event, along with Charlottetown’s Ted MacFadyen rink.  The Gallant team will begin their quest for their fifth consecutive provincial junior championship,  their second Canadian championship, and a World Junior gold medal, when they take part in the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships,  December 18-22 at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.
