PEI women spoil NL’s tiebreaker chance as The Dominion wraps up today

The Men’s and Women’s finals go at 3 pm Atlantic today at The Dominion National Curling Club Championships, Canada’s first-ever national championship for club curlers, being played at the St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto.

In the women’s final, it will be Ontario taking on Manitoba, while the men’s championship game will feature the winners of this morning’s 11 am Atlantic semi-finals between BC and Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and Ontariio.

In the final round robin draw yesterday, PEI’s women’s team, from the Crapaud Community Curling Club, spoiled Newfoundland and Labrador’s chance to advance to a tiebreaker round, with the Newfoundland team  stealing a single in the eighth to force an extra end. With Newfoundland lying shot rock in the back four-foot with a guard at the top of the twelve, the ninth end came down to a final shot from PEI skip Vanessa Hamming. Her weight was dead-on s her rock came to a stop right on the button, winning the game for PEI, and eliminating the need for a tiebreaker.

The PEI women ended play with a 2-4 win-loss record, while the men’s team, skipped by Louis Walsh of the Silver Fox, were winless in six starts.

A tiebreaker was needed in the men’s section, with New Brunswick beating the Northwest Territories in a close game in the final round robin draw to secure a tie-breaker with British Columbia.  BC won that game 11-3 and secured their berth in today’s Men’s Semi-Finals.

The next national The Dominion will be held on PEI, Nov. 23-28 2010 at the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs, with the PEI playdowns taking place March 18-21 2010 in Cornwall.
