The quarter-finals get underway at 9 this morning at the Labatt/Superstore/Journal-Pioneer Atlantic Curling Tour cashspiel at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with five of the eight qualifying teams coming from PEI.
The first quarter-final sees the defending champion Mike Gaudet rink, now skipped by Eddie MacKenzie, with Gaudet at third, taking on New Brunswick’s Dave Nowlan, who is formerly from Summerside. Summerside’s Mel Bernard rink, last year’s Senior champions, are playing Charlottetown’s Robert Campbell foursome in the second quarter-final matchup.
World junior silver-medallist Brett Gallant takes on Jamie Brennan of Fredericton NB in the third quarter-final, while tournament organizer Rod MacDonald and his veteran Charlottetown Curling Club rink of Kevin Champion, Mark O’Rourke, and Andrew Robinson play the Mark Armstrong team from New Brunswick in the final matchup.
In round robin play, Nowlan was 4-0 in the A pool, with MacDonald going 3-1. Gallant and Bernard were both 3-1 in the B Pool, while Armstrong went undefeated in the C pool, while MacKenzie had one loss. Brennan was 4-0, while Campbell went 3-1 in the D pool.
The semis go at noon, with the finals at 3. Twenty teams are taking part in this annual event.
The Atlantic Curling Tour wraps up with the Hub City Shootout in Moncton next weekend, followed by the ACT championship, also in Moncton, January 1-3.
