The Charlottetown Curling Club rink of Erin Carmody, Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Kathy O’Rourke, and Trisha Affleck, with coach Al Ledgerwood, stole two points in the final end this afternoon to beat the host Montague Curling Club’s Tammy Dewar rink by an 8-6 score, and win their first Scotties Provincial Women’s Curling Championship. They will now advance to the national Scotties, January 30 to February 7 in Sault Ste. Marie Ont. At that event, under Canadian Curling Association rules, which name the team after the player who calls the game, they are expected to be referred to as the Kathy O’Rourke rink, as, although Carmody throws last rock, it is O’Rourke who calls the shots.

In today’s game, Dewar, with hammer, took a single in the first end. Carmody blanked the second, but took a triple in the third. The teams traded singles in ends four and five, to give Carmody a 4-2 edge at the half. Dewar, whose team includes June Moyaert, Darlene London, and Gail Greene, grabbed the lead with a three point sixth end. The teams traded singles in seven and eight, and Carmody tied it up with a single in the ninth, and stole a deuce in the final end for the win. As Carmody won two of the three section finals in the triple knockout draw, she could take the title by winning either game today, and accomplished the feat in the first match.
