Rod MacDonald rink sweeps Tankard round robin to advance to finals

The defending champion Rod MacDonald rink stole a single in the eighth and a deuce in the ninth end of a 7-3 in over the Eddie MacKenzie foursome this afternoon, to complete a 5-0 sweep of the round robin at the Tankard Final Six in Alberton.  This puts the MacDonald team, which includes Kevin Champion, Andrew Robinson, and Mark O’Rourke, with 5th player Peter MacDonald, into the final, which will go Sunday at 6 pm.

Three teams, skipped by Eddie MacKenzie, Robert Campbell, and John Likely, finished with three wins and two losses. The MacKenzie foursome, which includes Mike Gaudet, Tyler Harris, and Sean Clarey, were awarded second place after records against the other teams in the tie, and draw to the button results throughout the competition were compared, and have advanced to the semi-final, Sunday at noon. They will play the winners of a tiebreaker, Saturday evening at 6, between Campbell and Likely, with the winner of the semi facing MacDonald in the final.

Out of the competition are Bill Hope, who ended at 1 and 4, and Tom Fetterley of Summerside, the only team in the Final Six not from the Charlottetown Curling Club, who did not manage to pick up a win, although they came closer than any other team to defeating MacDonald, losing 11-10 in an extra end in their round robin encounter.

The Labatt Tankard winners will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier, March 6-14 in Halifax.
