PEI splits Thursday games to end Firefighters play at 3-7

Round robin play wrapped up in Thursday at the Canadian Firefighters Curling Championship in Regina. PEI’s Gordon MacFadyen rink from the Summerside Fire Department, which includes third Leo Stewart, second Dwayne MacNeil, and lead stone Jim Arsenault, split their final games, losing 10-3 to Southern Ontario, but stealing a four-ender and a deuce en route to a 10-4 win over New Brunswick’s Joe Vautour and his Saint John FD team. PEI finishes with a 3-7 win-loss record, and will not advance to the playoff round.

There was a three-way tie for first, at 8-2, so draw to the button results were used to determine their ranking for the Page playoff round. Northern Ontario and BC finished first and second, respectively, and will advance to the 1 vs 2 game, while defending champion Jeff Gartner of Saskatchewan will play either New Brunswick or Manitoba, who both finished at 6-4, in the 3 vs 4 game. A tiebreaker game will take place today between NB and Manitoba, with the winner advancing to the final playoff spot in the Page 3 vs 4 game.

The Page games go at 7 pm PEI time today, with the winner of the 1 vs 2 advancing directly to the final, and the loser taking on the winner of the 3 vs 4 game in the semi, with the winner of the semi going to the final. The semi will take place Saturday at noon AT, with the final at 4 pm.
