Semi-finals set at 9th annual Rodd Curling Classic

The semi-finals go at 11 this morning, with the finals at 2 pm, as the 9th annual Rodd Curling Classic, sponsored by Rodd Hotels and Resorts, wraps up at the Charlottetown Curling Club.
The men’s semis see defending champion Shawn Adams of Halifax take on nine-time PEI Tankard winner Peter Gallant, with his son Brett, a world junior curling silver medallist, throwing last rocks,  and Robert Campbell from the host club, an eight-time Tankard champ, face Chad Stevens from Nova Scotia.  Adams and Campbell were undefeated in the round robin, while Gallant and Stevens each had one loss.
In the women’s division semi-final round, defending champion Andrea Kelly of New Brunswick will take on PEI’s Suzanne Birt, a former world junior champion and five-time PEI Scotties winner, while Canadian Scotties silver medallist Kathy O’Rourke of Charlottetown plays Jennifer Crouse from Dartmouth. O’Rourke and Kelly were both undefeated in the round robin, with Birt having one loss. Crouse had two losses in her pool, but got the final playoff spot when records against the other teams were compared.
In men’s quarter-final play on Saturday night. Chad Stevens edged out John Likely of Charlottetown 5-4, while Peter Gallant doubled Danny Christianson of Halifax 4-2.
 The men’s prize structure sees $5000 going to the first place team, $2500 to the runner-up, 3rd and 4th place finishers getting $2500 each, while the 5th and 6th place teams will go home with $1600. On the women’s side, the winning team takes home $3100, with $2100 to the second place team, and $1250 for third and fourth place. There is also a $40 payout per round robin win in the women’s section.

18 men’s and 12 women’s teams began play on Thursday in this annual event.
