Annual Cashspiel gets underway today in S’Side

Play gets underway at 12:30 this afternoon in the annual Labatt/Journal-Pioneer Cashspiel at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with 20 rinks from all three Maritime provinces taking part. Other draws today are at 3, 6, and 8:30 pm.

Among the entrants are the Peter Gallant rink, with his son Brett, a former Canadian Junior champion and World junior silver medallist throwing 4th stones, along with current PEI Tankard champ Rod MacDonald, and Canadian Mixed champion skip Robert Campbell. Mel Bernard and Tom Fetterly are entered from the host club.

Last year, the Brett Gallant team from the Charlottetown Curling Club beat their clubmates, the  Robert Campbell foursome, by a 7-4 score in the final. Gallant’s teammates last yeare were Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen.

This year’s event features an $8000 purse, with $2000 going to the winning team, $1600 to the runner-up, $1000 to the third and fourth place teams, and $600 for the fifth through eighth place finishers.
