Bernard and Sweetapple win A section finals at PEI Masters

Marco Polo Land

A maximum of two games remain in both the men’s and women’s sections of the double-knockout Marco Polo Land Provincial Masters Curling Championships being played at the Charlottetown Curling Club, and those games have now been postponed to Friday, at 10 am and 1 pm, because of the storm predicted for Thursday.

The Mel Bernard rink from Summerside, and the defending champion Carol Sweetapple foursome from Cornwall have advanced to the final on Friday at 1 pm, by virtue of winning the A section final on Wednesday. Bernard beat Charlottetown’s Bill Hope team 6-1 in the men’s A final, stealing three in the fifth end to bring the game to an early conclusion. A stolen deuce in end two, and a triple in the final end gave Sweetapple an 8-6 win over Charlottetown’s Valerie MacLean.

Defending men’s champ Clair Sweet of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club was eliminated from further play Wednesday afternoon, losing 6-2 to Hope. Also out was Cornwall’s Rod MacLean, in a 5-4 loss to Bernard. The Men’s B final, Friday at 10 am, will be a rematch of the A event, with Hope taking on Bernard. The women’s B finalists were decided on Tuesday, with Diane MacKay of Cornwall taking on Jeanne Duffenais from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.

If Bernard also wins the Men’s B final, Friday morning at 10 am, he will take the event, and the afternoon championship game will not be needed. As there will be different A and B winners in the women’s division, there will be a 1 pm women’s final.

Sixteen men’s and four women’s teams took part in the event.

Winners and runners-up earn the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships, February 14-19, also at the Charlottetown Curling Club.
Winners may also participate in the Canadian Masters, March 30 to April 5 at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg.
