Capital One Grand Slam event could be coming to Summerside in 2012

It was mentioned during CBC’s coverage of the Player’s Championship this afternoon (won by Kevin Martin over Sweden’s Niklas Edin) that Summerside will host a Grand Slam curling event in 2012.  J.P. Desrosiers, event development officer for the city’s Community Services and Recreation Department, confirmed recently that  the city was looking into submitting a bid to become part of the Capital One Grand Slam.

Held annually since 2001-02, the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling is a series of four premier  events that feature the strongest curling fields from across Canada and the world. The events are closely tied to the Canadian Curling Association’s qualifying process for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Through their performance in the Grand Slam events, Canadian teams can earn significant qualifying points towards securing a berth at the 2013 Canadian Olympic Trials.

We’ll have more info when an official announcement is made.
