Birt rink ends play at Sun Life Classic with 3-3 record

PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink made it to a qualifier game this afternoon, but lost 7-1 to an American rink, skipped by Erika Brown, and did not advance to the money round at the the Sun Life Classic in Brantford Ontario. After play Saturday, Team Birt sat at 2-2, recording wins over Marie-France Larouche of Quebec, and Robyn Silvernagell of Saskatchewan. The Birt foursome then beat the American Cassie Potter team 7-2 Sunday morning, and advanced to an afternoon C qualifier match against Brown, whose team includes former world champion Debbie McCormick at third.

The women’s qualifiers are Scotland’s Eve Muirhead, Ontario’s Sherry Middaugh, Brown, Heather Smith-Dacey of Halifax, Krista McCarville of Ontario, Jennifer Jones of Manitoba, Ali Nimik of Ontario, and Laura Crocker of Ontario.

Qualifying in the men’s section are  Sven Michel of Switzerland, Rasmus Stjerne of Norway, Glenn Howard of Ontario, Manitoba’s Mike McEwen, Kevin Koe of Alberta,  Sweden’s Niklan Edin, and Mark Keen and Greg Balsdon, both from Ontario.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Brad Gushue rink, which includes PEI native Adam Casey, did not qualify for the money round.

The finals go Monday at 1:30 pm Atlantic.
