Nine PEI rinks off to Moncton this weekend for Molson Canadian Hub City Shootout cashspiel

The fifth annual Molson Canadian Hub City Shootout, the richest event on the Atlantic Curling Tour, gets underway Thursday evening and wraps up on Sunday afternoon at Curl Moncton’s Beaver and Beauséjour curling clubs, with 24 men’s teams, and 8 women’s rinks competing for $24,000 in cash prizes.

The 24 team men’s division includes ten New Brunswick, eight Nova Scotia, and six PEI rinks. The Island teams are skipped by Brett Gallant, who won the Challenge Casino de Charlevoix World Curling Tour event in Quebec two weekends ago, defeating Brad Gushue with former teammate Adam Casey in the final, along with Rod MacDonald, who won the Labatt/Journal Pioneer Cashspiel final in Summerside by a measure over Mike Gaudet the same weekend, and previously finished as runner-up to Moncton’s James Grattan in the TSA Fundy Cashspiel in Saint John NB. Gaudet is also competing, along with Robert Campbell, who was a semi-finalist in the TSA event, Robert Shaw, and Jamie Newson.

Five teams from New Brunswick, and three from PEI, are taking part in the women’s division, including PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink, who lost to New Brunswick’s Sylvie Robichaud in last year’s event final, along with teams skipped by Meaghan Hughes and Donna Butler.

All games are eight ends. Opening draws are 9 pm Thursday. The women’s teams play a two pool round robin, with two crossovers to the other pool, guaranteeing five games. The top two teams advance to the 12 noon Sunday final

The men play a triple knockout to eight qualifiers format, with the quarter-finals going Sunday morning at nine, the semis taking place at noon, and the final scheduled for 3:30 pm.

Tickets are available at either curling club, for $5 a draw or $15 for the full event.
