The newly reconstructed Cornwall Curling Club – a photo tour

Cornwall Curling Club

The spotlight will be on the new Cornwall Curling Club later this month for the Atlantic University Curling Championships from January 13-15, and the Labatt Tankard provincial men’s curling championships from January 26-31.  Work is now complete on the new Cornwall Civic Centre, which houses the clubhouse portion of the curling club, along with the Lions Club, the 50+ club, and a large multi-purpose hall. The Centre has been completely rebuilt from the foundation up. As well, a separate building has been constructed adjacent to the Civic Centre to house a brand new ice plant for the curling club, along with facilities for the adjacent swimming pool. The ice house portion of the curling club has undergone roof repairs, and has received new viewing windows, a second entranceway to the ice area, new steps and carpeting, and a ramp, allowing access to the ice surface for wheelchair curling, facilitated by an entrance ramp on the Cornwall Road, and an elevator between the two levels of the Civic Centre.

Funding for the $2 million Civic Centre reconstruction came from the Building Canada Fund, the Government of Prince Edward Island under Build PEI, the Town of Cornwall, and the Canadian Curling Association’s Capital Grants program. Fitzgerald and Snow were the general contractors for the project, with engineering by CBCL.

The ice house roof repairs, and the ice plant replacement, costing $128,576, was funded via the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program and the Island Community Fund, a six-year $27.5 million program established by the provincial government to address infrastructure needs with a focus on rural communities. The ice plant replacement was done by Berg Chilling Systems of Toronto  Ont., and Cornwall’s Lowther Refrigeration.
