CBC Grand Slam pullout may expand TV coverage for Summerside event (Journal)

SUMMERSIDE – The City of Summerside and the Capital One GP Car and Home Players Curling Championship may be the big winners in a change in broadcasters.

It was learned late Wednesday that CBC Sports had decided to end its broadcast of the Asham World Curling Tour’s annual series.

This put the GP Car and Home Players’ Championship event set for Credit Union Place in Summerside in April in jeopardy. Without a major broadcaster on board, it was feared sponsorship of the event could be pulled.

Kevin Albrecht, president and CEO of iSport Media and Management which operates the event, said a separate broadcast deal is now being arranged that will greatly increase the television coverage of the event.

“We will be making an announcement regarding an exclusive broadcast partnership for the Grand Slam events shortly,” Albrecht said in an email. “This announcement will only enhance the Players’ Championships in Summerside as we will be going from the previous nine hours of coverage to over 30 hours of national coverage. It is very exciting for our players and the events and I know Summerside will be tremendous hosts for the Players’ Championships.”
