Curlers of all ages in action at Island clubs over the weekend

Around the rinks this weekend:

PEI  Men’s Tankard and Seniors hopefuls Bill Hope, Craig Mackie, Matt Smith, and David Murphy from the Charlottetown Curling Club went 6-0 for the weekend in winning the Harvey’s General Store Open Bonspiel at the newly-renovated Crapaud Community Curling Club.

New Brunswick’s Junior Men’s champions, the Josh Barry foursome from the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton NB, edged the Drew MacCormack rink from the Windsor NS Curling Club 5-3 this afternoon to win the Spring Thaw Junior Cashspiel at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Berry beat Mary Myketyn Driscoll from the Truro Curling Club 7-1, while MacCormack defeated OLeary’s Matthew MacLean 6-4 in the semi-finals. 18 teams were entered. The winning Berry rink takes home $700, with $350 going to the runner-up MacCormack squad, MacLean and Myketyn Driscoll each go home with $250, while $125 goes to quarter-finalists Veronica Smith of Cornwall and Sam Ramsay of Charlottetown. Eighteen teams took part in the annual event for curlers age 20 and under.

The Montague Curling Club hosted the fifth annual George’s Deck and Recovery bonspiel for curlers age 12 and Under, and are getting ready to Curl for Cancer on Feb. 4.
