Masters underway at Maple Leaf club

Day one wrapped up this afternoon at The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy Provincial Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. One of the two defending champions, the Carol Sweetapple rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, lost their two opening games in the double knockout event, and are already out of the competition. The other champion from last year, the Mel Bernard foursome from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside is 0-1 after opening day play. Clair Sweet from the host club, Louis Walsh from the Silver Fox in Summerside, and Roddie MacLean from Cornwall are 1-0 on the men’s side, while John Holmes from the Fox is 1-1. Fred Fall (Silver Fox) and Walter Callaghan (Western) are 0-1.

The Marg Nowlan rink from the Silver Fox is atop the women’s standings, with a 2-0 record. Ruth Stavert from Cornwall, and Shirley Berry from Charlottetown and Cornwall are 1-1.

Tuesday draws go at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. The event wraps up on Wednesday.

Winners and runners-up earn the right to compete in the Maritime Masters Championships, February 12-19, in New Glasgow NS. The winning teams, or the highest-finishing men’s and women’s rinks that choose to attend, are invited to participate in the Canadian Masters, March 26 to April 1 in Montreal.
