PEI Senior men’s final set: Bernard vs Wilkinson, starting at 6 pm

The Mel Bernard rink from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside beat the Rod MacDonald foursome from the Charlottetown and Montague curling clubs by a 9-4 score this afternoon to advance to the 6 pm final of the Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Seniors Curling Championships at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The Bernard team, who won the C division of the triple knockout event, will be taking on the A section winners, the Charlie Wilkinson rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club in this evening’s championship game.

In this afternoon’s game, the Bernard rink, which includes third Ted MacFadyen, second Lou Nowlan, and lead Earle Proude,  led 8-1 after six ends half, following a second end deuce with a steal of another pair, followed by two single steals and another stolen deuce. MacDonald came back with a deuce and a single in ends 7 and 8, but Bernard picked up a single in nine to put the game out of reach. Other members of the MacDonald team are third John Likely, George Koke at second stone, and Doug MacGregor in the lead position.

Wilkinson’s teammates are Ken McGregor at third, second Phillip McInnis, and lead Bill Doherty.

The winner of tonight’s championship game between Bernard and Wilkinson will advance to the Canadian Seniors championships, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC. Nine teams took part in the PEI event. The Provincial Women’s Seniors Championships start Friday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, with eight teams taking part.
