Both the PEI men’s rink, skipped by Matthew MacLean from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, and the Veronica Smith women’s team from the Cornwall Curling Club, finished as runners-up in this afternoon’s finals of the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow NS.

The MacLean foursome took a 4-0 undefeated win-loss record into the men’s final, against 2nd place Daniel Prest and his Bridgewater NS team, who finished round robin play at 3-1. The teams were tied at 4-4 after eight ends in the low-scoring championship game, but Prest stole a deuce in the extra end for a 6-4 win.

Other members of the winning Prest team are third David MacNeil, second Ian Smith, and lead Matt Clahane, with coach Ken Smith. Third Marshall Smallman, second Kevin Gallant, and lead Alan MacLean, with coach Glen MacLean, round out the MacLean rink.

Stephen Trickett and his St. John’s NL team edged the Daniel Jessome foursome from Chester NS by a 6-5 score to win the men’s consolation. The fifth team in the men’s competition, PEI native Kyle Hughes and his Saint John NB team, did not pick up a win in the event, and finished out of the playoffs.

The Veronica Smith team from the Cornwall Curling Club ended round robin play atop the women’s standings with a 3-1 record, with three teams finishing second at 2-2. The Cathlia Ward foursome from Fredericton advanced to the final, after tiebreaking rules were brought into play, and won the game by a 7-4 score over the Smith team, picking up three points in the seventh, and running them out of rocks in the eighth end.

Playing with Ward were third Jane DiCarlo, second Katie Forward, and lead Katelyn Kelly, with coach Mark Ward. Rounding out the Smith foursome were third Katie Fullerton, second Sabrina Smith, and lead Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith.

The other two teams at 2-2, the Krista Nix foursome from the host Bluenose club and the Hayley McCabe team from the Lakeshore Curling Club in Halifax, squared off in the consolation final, with the Nix team picking up five points in the seventh end on the way to a 6-2 win. The Sarah Hill team from St. John’s finished out of the playoffs at 1-3.

The Atlantic Under 18 championships feature the Atlantic provincial champions in the 18 and Under age category, plus a host team, in both men’s and women’s divisions, and is held annually, normally during Easter weekend, rotating between the four Atlantic provinces.
