Women’s semifinals set at Player’ Championship (Journal)

Championship game goes this afternoon

SUMMERSIDE – The women’s semifinals are set at the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling Sun Life Financial Players’ Championship here at EastLink Arena.

Winnipeg’s Cathy Overton-Clapham, who finished first in the round robin of the eight-team event at 6-1 (won-lost), will face Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., in one of two semifinals on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton will take on Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones in the other. The winners then advance to that afternoon’s championship game at 1 p.m.

Middaugh rallied from a 5-1 deficit after five ends to edge Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin 6-5 in a tiebreaker on Friday night to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot. Both rinks finished round-robin play at 4-3.

“It definitely wasn’t textbook curling,” said Middaugh. “We didn’t really show up for the first six ends, unfortunately, and I certainly did not play well. We just hung in there, and you never give up.
