Michel rink repeats as winners in all-Swiss Baden Masters final, Team Gushue bows out in quarters

Defending champion Sven Michel and his Swiss team scored a triple in the fourth end this morning on the way to a 7-5 victory over the Peter de Cruz rink, also from the host country, to repeat as champions of the Baden Masters in Baden Switzerland.

St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador’s Brad Gushue team, which includes PEI natives Adam Casey and Brett Gallant at third and second respectively, lost out in the quarter-final round on Saturday by a 5-3 score to the  de Cruz rink, finishing their weekend play at the season-opening World Curling Tour event with a 3-2 win-loss record. Earlier on Saturday, the Gushue squad downed the Bernhard Werthemann foursome from Switzerland by a 9-5 score. Gushue had won this event back in 2007 and 2009.

In Sunday morning’s 4 am Atlantic semi-finals, de Cruz beat Mario Freiberger, also from Switzerland, by a 7-3 score, while Rasmus Sterne of Denmark, who doubled Gushue 8-4 in round robin play, lost 5-4 to defending champion Svend Michel of Switzerland to setup the all-Swiss final, between de Cruz and Michel. The event has a total purse of approximately $30,000.
