Jeff Stoughton and Mary Anne Arsenault rinks win Toronto Tankard

Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton beat Ontario’s Joe Frans 6-2 in this afternoon’s final to win the men’s division of the World Curling Tour’s StuSells Toronto Tankard.

Newfoundlland and Labrador’s Brad Gushue rink, with PEI’s Adam Casey and Brett Gallant,  lost their last chance to qualify for the money round late Sunday night, losing 3-1 to the Brad Jacobs rink of Sault Ste. Marie, which includes Gushue’s former teammate Ryan Fry at third. The Gushue team lost their B side qualifier 4-3 to Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg, and their A event qualifier 7-6 to Mike McEwen, also from the ‘Peg..

McEwen, who went 3-0  after winning the A qualifier of the triple knockout event, and getting to spend most of Sunday on the golf course, suffered  a 5-3 upset to Frans in the only Sunday night quarter-final. The remaining quarters on Monday morning saw Rob Rumfeldt beat Mark Kean 7-4, Stoughton down Guy Hemmings 6-1, and Bryan Cochrane upset Jacobs 7-3, scoring four points in the sixth end and stealing a single in the seventh to build up a four point lead coming home.

In the semis, Stoughton beat Rumfeldt 7-3, while Frans beat Cochrane 5-3.

On the women’s side, Mary Anne Arsenault and her Halifax rink, backed up by Colleen Jones at third and Kim Kelly at second, with lead Jennifer Baxter, beat the Lisa Farnell rink from Elgin Ont. 7-2. Arsenault shut the game down early, with a five point steal in the sixth end.point
