Weekend cashspiel update #2: Dolan loses out in Halifax semis, Webster qualifies for money round in Saskatoon

Here’s an update on this weekend’s cashspiels that feature PEI teams or players.

Oak Island

The Oak Island Junior Cashspiel in Chester NS got underway Saturday and concludes on Monday. PEI’s Chris Gallant rink is 1-2 in round robin play, and will finish out of the playoff round.The Lindsay Doucet rink which includes Seven Mile Bay’s Anita Casey started off at 0-2, and then picked up a pair of wins and were awarded first place in their pool, based on draw to the button results against the other two 2-2 teams. The Robert Mayhew rink, coached by former Islander and world junior champ Alan Mayhew will also advance to Monday’s playoff round, finishing in first place in their pool. at 3-1.

The junior men’s quarter finals go at 8 am Monday, with the junior women’s semi-finals at 10, the junior men’s semis at 11:30, with the finals following the semis.

Molson Mayflower Hurry Hard for Hunger

The finals took place at 3:30 this afternoon at the Molson “Hurry Hard for Hunger” cashspiel at the Halifax Mayflower club, with James Grattan of Moncton beating Rob Harris of Halifax 5-2 on the men’s side, and Mary Mattatall doubling Mayflower clubmate Mary-Anne Arsenault 6-3 on the women’s side.

Charlottetown’s Kim Dolan rink lost 10-3 to eventual winner Mattatall in the 12:30 pm semi-finals, after finishing round robin play with a 2-2 win-loss record.

Jamie Newson of Charlottetown finished round robin play at 1-3, while Montague’s Donald Clarey didn’t pick up a win in his four games.

Colonial Square

Calgary’s Crystal Webster rink, which includes PEI natives Erin Carmody and Geri-Lynn Ramsay, qualified on the B side this morning for the 9 am Monday quarter-final round at the $54,000 Colonial Square Ladies Classic in Saskatoon, beating the Renee Sonnenburg team from Grande Prairie by a 6-4 score.Team Webster are the defending champs in this event, which wraps up with the semi-finals at 12:30, and the final at  7:30 pm Monday.

Qualifying on the A side of the triple knockout were Anna Sidorova of Russia, Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey, and Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon. The other B qualifiers are Laura Crocker of Edmonton, Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink,  Rachel Homan from Ottawa,  Eve Muirhead of Scotland,  and Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg. The final four qualifiers will be decided later tonight.
