Saunders vs Newson, MacDonald vs Shaw in Silver Fox Journal-Pioneer Cashspiel semis

 The four teams for the 10 am Sunday semi-finals were determined today in the annual Journal-Pioneer Atlantic Curling Tour Cashspiel at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside.

In the 2 pm Saturday draw, Scott Saunders of Halifax edged Robert Shaw of Charlottetown 4-3 to grab Qualifier #1 for the semi-final. Rod MacDonald scored two 4-enders in a 9-3 win over Charlottetown Curling Complex clubmate Jamie Newson to capture Qualifier #2.

The final two qualifiers were determined in the 6 pm draw, with Robert Shaw getting by three-time Senior champ Mel Bernard by a 6-5 score to win Qualifier #3, and Jamie Newson scoring three points in the seventh end in a 7-2 win over Charlottetown clubmate and Summerside native Mike Gaudet to take the final qualifying spot.

The Consolation final was played Saturday evening, with Anthony Purcell and his Halifax rink which includes Summerside native Neil Gallant at second, trouncing Charlottetown’s Blair Weeks squad by a 12-4 score, taking six of those points in the seventh end.

The Sunday morning semi-final matchups see Scott Saunders (Qualifier #1) take on Jamie Newson (Qualifier #4), and Qualifier #2, Rod MacDonald, facing the third qualifier, Robert Shaw. The winners of the two semis will advance to the 1 pm final.

The winning team will receive $1800, with $1200 going to the runner-up, $900 going to the semi-finalists who did not advance to the finak, and $600 going to the Anthony Purcell rink as Consolation winners.
