Kathy O’Rourke (4-0) will be in Hub City women’s finals, no Island men’s teams make it to playoff round

 

The 6th annual Molson Canadian Hub City Shootout cashspiel wraps up today aat Moncton’s Beaver and Beausejour clubs with the final women’s round robin draw at 8 am, the men’s quarter-finals at 9, the women’s final and the men’s semi-finals at noon, and the men’s championship game at 3:30 pm.

PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke rink is the only undefeated women’s rink, with a 4-0 win-loss record, and, win or lose in the final draw, they will be one of the two teams in the finals. They play the Marie Christianson foursome from NS (1-3) in their last round robin game. New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford rink is 3-1, and plays PEI’s Suzanne Birt in the final round robin draw. Birt, along with Sandy Comeau, Mary Jane McGuire and Sylvie Robichaud, all from NB, are next at 2-2 while Montague’s Tammy Dewar foursome are 0-4.

On Saturday, the O’Rourke rink, which includes Meaghan Hughes, who throws 4th stones, along with Jackie Reid, Tricia Affleck, and alternate Stefanie Clark, edged her clubmates the Suzanne Birt team 8-7 in an extra end, after Birt forced the extra with an 8th end triple. O’Rourke then stole a five ender to double McGuire 8-4 in a game that ended early. The PEI rink capped off the day with an 8-5 win over Crawford.

The Island mens rinks didn’t fare so well on Saturday and will be watching today’s playoff round from the other side of the glass. The men’s quarters see Mark Dacey of Halifax play James Grattan from Moncton, Team Revolve (Jamie Murphy of NS) face Zack Eldridge (NB), Paul Dobson (NB) take on Jason Vaughan (NB), and Mark Lecocq play Terry Odishaw in another all-New Brunswick matchup.

In PEI men’s play yesterday, Robert Shaw lost 9-6 to Eldridge in the B pool, and then lost his C flight game 8-2 to Andrew Symonds of NL. Rod MacDonald lost 7-6 to Pierre Fraser of NB, and 8-2 to Vaughan ,and Jamie Newson lost 6-5 to Nova Scotia’s Brent MacDougall, and 6-4 to Eldridge.

Eddie MacKenzie also lost 6-5 to  MacDougall,  Mike Gaudet lost 5-3 to Martin Ferland of Quebec, and Blair Weeks lost 6-4 to Odishaw.

Six PEI men’s rinks and three Island women’s teams began play Thursday in the event.
